Senior Haskell Engineer

We are recruiting for a Senior Software Engineer with strong Haskell or PureScript experience to join a high-calibre technology team based in Dublin.

The Dublin engineering organisation is focused on solving complex technology challenges across high-performance backend services, distributed systems, streaming platforms, automotive technology, advertising technology, data science and analytics.

Haskell or PureScript is the primary language requirement. Scala experience is not required.The team is looking for strong functional programmers who can bring deep expertise in Haskell or PureScript and apply that knowledge to challenging distributed-systems problems. The successful candidate will be trained and supported in Scala, including the Typelevel ecosystem and modern functional Scala libraries.

This makes the role particularly interesting for experienced Haskell or PureScript engineers who want to move into Scala without having to compromise on their functional programming background.

What you’ll do

• Design and build scalable, performant and resilient backend systems.
• Develop applications using Haskell or PureScript as your primary language.
• Work on distributed systems operating at significant scale.
• Apply functional programming principles including strong typing, referential transparency and composable design.
• Work with concurrency, asynchronous processing and functional effect systems.
• Participate in system design and architecture discussions.
• Influence technical direction and engineering standards.
• Build and maintain high-quality APIs and backend services.
• Contribute to automated testing, continuous integration and software quality.
• Investigate and resolve complex production issues.
• Author and review technical design documents, RFCs and root cause analyses.
• Work closely with other engineers and technical stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing.
• Take ownership of projects from design through to production.
• Participate in an on-call rotation for critical production systems.
• Develop your Scala expertise through dedicated training and hands-on experience.

What you’ll need

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong commercial experience with Haskell or PureScript.
• Strong knowledge of functional programming principles.
• Experience developing backend applications or distributed systems.
• Experience with strongly typed programming languages.
• Experience with concurrency, asynchronous programming or functional effect systems.
• Strong understanding of software architecture and system design.
• Experience building and operating production software.
• Experience working with APIs and distributed services.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• A genuine interest in learning Scala.

The team will provide training and support to help you transition into Scala and the Typelevel ecosystem, including technologies such as: Scala, Cats, Cats Effect, FS2, Circe, http4s, ZIO.

Your existing knowledge of functional programming, type systems, concurrency and effectful programming will provide a strong foundation for this transition.
