O que você fará Avalara is accelerating delivery of AI-enabled capabilities across our compliance platform to improve customer experience, increase engineering velocity, and scale global operations. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will build reliable, scalable systems that support global transaction growth and help teams use artificial intelligence in practical, secure, and measurable ways. You will work with engineering, product, and business teams to deliver backend and frontend capabilities that improve automation, data processing, and customer insight. In this role you will be expected to raise engineering standards through ownership, technical judgment, mentoring, and responsible use of AI. You will report to the Senior Manager of Software Engineering, and you will work remotely, anywhere in Brazil. #LI-remote Quais serão as suas responsabilidades About the Role Build and enhance scalable SaaS applications and platform integrations. Develop high-quality full-stack solutions that support automated sales tax and compliance. Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and cross-functional teams to transform product vision into reliable, production-ready features. Contribute to a collaborative engineering culture focused on innovation, quality, and continuous improvement. Report directly to a Senior Engineering Manager. Individual Contributor (IC) role with no people management responsibilities. Fully remote position based in Brazil. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable full-stack applications. Build reliable APIs, integrations, and backend services. Deliver clean, maintainable, and well-tested code following engineering best practices. Participate in architecture discussions and technical design decisions. Troubleshoot production issues and improve system performance, reliability, and scalability. Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, and Engineers throughout the software development lifecycle. Contribute to code reviews and continuously improve development standards and processes. Bar Raiser Expectations As a Bar Raiser, you will help elevate engineering excellence across the DAVO platform by: Setting a high standard for code quality, ownership, reliability, and operational excellence. Using data and engineering metrics (filing success rates, uptime, latency, MTTR, defect rates, operational efficiency) to drive technical and product decisions. Simplifying complex tax and compliance workflows into scalable, resilient, and maintainable systems. Mentoring and supporting engineers to strengthen technical expertise and ownership. Challenging assumptions constructively and driving measurable improvements across architecture, delivery, and operations. Continuously improving services, engineering practices, and platform scalability. Helping shape the long-term technical direction of the platform beyond feature delivery. Ensuring the platform remains reliable, secure, and capable of operating at scale. AI Expectations Avalara continues to invest in AI-driven capabilities, this role is expected to incorporate AI into how tax automation, compliance workflows, and platform operations are designed and executed. This role will: Design and implement AI-enabled solutions that improve the speed, accuracy, and scalability of tax collection, filing, and remittance workflows. Leverage AI tools to enhance development productivity, accelerate debugging, and improve root cause analysis for production and filing issues Identify high-impact opportunities where AI can reduce manual effort, improve reliability, or enhance the customer experience Apply AI thoughtfully with proper attention to data accuracy, compliance, security, and risk management Contribute to building AI capability within the team by sharing learnings and promoting effective, responsible usage This role is expected to demonstrate practical AI impact—improving efficiency, reliability, or quality—rather than just using AI tools casually. O que precisa possuir para ser bem sucedido Proven experience delivering high-quality features to production, with expertise in service-Oriented architectures, micro-services, and web application development. Strong understanding of system performance trade-offs, load balancing, and high-availability engineering Full-stack development experience with TypeScript, Node.js, and Python; adaptability across technologies is highly valued. Additional experience with Java, React, micro-services, web services, and REST APIs is a plus Experience working with MySQL and Aurora DB as primary transactional relational databases Familiarity with modern cloud and observability tools, including Redis, Prometheus, and Grafana. Experience with Docker for containerization, Kubernetes for orchestration, and AWS (experience with Azure or GCP is also welcomed) Collaborate cross-functionally to solve complex challenges and continuously improve application performance and efficiency Prior experience with tax industry is a plus Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field preferred 10+ years of professional software development experience A Avalara é uma empresa AI-first AI is embedded in our workflows, decision-making, and products.
