About the role As a Senior Backend Engineer at Tyro, you will be a senior member of the Technology team, initially focused on supporting and enhancing the Banking platform. You will contribute to reliable, secure and maintainable backend services in a high-availability financial services environment, with a particular focus on Kotlin and/or Java, Spring Boot, AWS and SQL-based systems. Over time, the role will also provide opportunities to contribute to Tyro's Accounting platform and integration initiatives across Banking and Accounting, including APIs and new features such as Payroll. You will work collaboratively with engineers, product managers, operations, risk and other stakeholders to deliver practical business outcomes while supporting modern engineering practices and AI to enhance productivity. What you'll do Support, maintain and enhance backend services for Tyro’s Banking platform, including legacy platform maintenance, security vulnerability remediation, reporting and service improvements. Build and operate reliable services in AWS, with practical experience across containers and services such as ECS, EKS and related cloud infrastructure. Work with MySQL and SQL-based data stores to support reporting, platform enhancements, troubleshooting and production support activities. Identify, assess and remediate software, operational and security risks, especially within regulated or high-availability production environments. Collaborate closely with product, operations, risk, compliance and engineering stakeholders to translate requirements into pragmatic technical solutions. Over time, contribute to integration initiatives between the Banking and Accounting platforms, including APIs, shared capabilities and new product features such as Payroll. Mentor and support other engineers through code reviews, technical discussion and constructive feedback, helping maintain a strong engineering culture. Focus on leveraging AI to be more efficient and incorporate this into your daily work rhythm. What you'll bring Senior-level backend engineering experience, preferably 5+ years in production software engineering roles. Strong Kotlin and/or Java development expertise, with solid Spring Boot and JVM ecosystem experience. Practical AWS cloud experience, including containers and services such as ECS and/or EKS. Strong MySQL and SQL skills, including the ability to design, query, troubleshoot and optimise data-backed services. Experience with GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and modern engineering delivery practices. Experience supporting production systems in regulated, high-availability or customer-critical environments. Strong understanding of backend service design, APIs, microservices, observability, reliability and maintainability. Clear communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, risk, operations and stakeholder groups. Highly desirable Banking, fintech, payments or broader financial services experience. Knowledge of compliance, risk and regulatory operating environments. Secure coding experience, including vulnerability assessment and remediation. Experience building and operating microservices and API-led platforms. Experience with AI engineering productivity tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or Cursor. Beneficial future / secondary skills C# / .NET experience. Azure platform experience. Cosmos DB experience. Experience with accounting, payroll or ERP integrations. What’s in it for you?
