Overview The Software Engineer, Capabilities is a backend-focused engineer responsible for building the systems and APIs that others build on top of. This person is responsible for designing and shipping the backend capabilities, microservices, and APIs that enable Product AI Engineers to move fast and build intelligent features. The Software Engineer, Capabilities leverages AI tooling throughout their own development workflow, and builds the AI-powered capabilities that make our product platform smarter. Responsibilities AI-Powered Capability Development Designs, builds, and ships AI-enabled backend capabilities that are consumed by Product AI Engineers via APIs and microservices. Integrates LLM and AI/ML services (e.g., AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic APIs) into backend workflows, translating AI capabilities into clean, composable service interfaces. Builds durable, observable AI workflows using orchestration tools such as Temporal and AWS Step Functions, enabling reliable execution of complex, multi-step AI processes. Owns the design of backend services that abstract AI model complexity and expose predictable, versioned APIs for consumption by product teams. Actively uses AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate your own development velocity and contribute to team best practices around AI-augmented engineering. Backend Services & API Engineering Architects and develops robust, scalable microservices and REST/gRPC APIs using .NET and C#, adhering to clean architecture and domain-driven design principles. Builds and maintains serverless compute capabilities using AWS Lambda and containerized services deployed via ECS, EKS, or similar container orchestration platforms. Designs APIs with a consumer-first mindset — prioritizing clarity, discoverability, versioning, and backward compatibility so Product AI Engineers can integrate with confidence. Develops event-driven and asynchronous architectures using services such as AWS SQS, SNS, EventBridge, or Kafka to support scalable, loosely coupled system integrations. Partners closely with Product AI Engineers as the primary internal consumer of your services, gathering feedback to continuously improve API contracts and capabilities. Cloud-Native Engineering Builds and operates cloud-native applications on AWS leveraging Lambda, containers, Step Functions, API Gateway, and related managed services. Implements observability best practices including structured logging, distributed tracing, and metrics instrumentation across all services. Designs for resilience — incorporating retry logic, circuit breakers, dead-letter queues, and graceful degradation into distributed service architectures. Quality, Standards & Collaboration Writes clean, testable, well-documented code and APIs, including unit, integration, and contract tests. Participates actively in architecture reviews, design discussions, and pull request feedback, upholding Engineering standards and driving continuous improvement. Contributes to internal developer documentation, API specifications (OpenAPI/Swagger), and capability catalogs that help other engineers discover and use backend services. Collaborates with QA, Security, and Infrastructure teams to ensure services meet quality, performance, and compliance standards. Contributes to the team's adoption of AI-driven SDLC practices, including automated code review, AI-assisted testing, and intelligent pipeline tooling. Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field. Associate Software Engineer I, Capabilities: 0-1 years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend systems and API development. Associate Software Engineer II, Capabilities: 1-3 years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend systems and API development. Software Engineer, Capabilities: 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend systems and API development. Sr. Software Engineer, Capabilities: 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend systems and API development. Proficiency in .NET and C#, with demonstrated experience building production-grade web APIs and microservices. Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs with a strong intuition for API contract design, versioning, and developer experience. Hands-on experience with cloud-native development on AWS, including one or more of: Lambda, Step Functions, ECS/EKS, API Gateway, SQS/SNS. Familiarity with containerization using Docker and deployment in containerized environments. Understanding of asynchronous, event-driven, and workflow-orchestrated architectures. Solid foundation in software engineering fundamentals including data structures, system design, testing, and version control (Git/GitHub). Preferred Qualifications: Experience building services that integrate with AI/ML APIs or LLM providers (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS Bedrock, Azure AI). Experience with workflow orchestration using Temporal or AWS Step Functions in a production environment. Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot. Familiarity with gRPC, GraphQL, or event-driven messaging patterns. Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment. A genuine enthusiasm for building backend platforms and developer-facing capabilities — you find satisfaction when your API becomes someone else's superpower.
