Salary Range: $70,000.00 To $90,000.00 Annually Role Overview Voting Rights Lab, a national nonpartisan 501(c)(3), and its 501(c)(4) affiliate are fighting the state-level battles that will shape elections in 2026, 2028, and for decades to come. In 2025 alone, we stopped a wave of proof-of-citizenship mandates in red and purple states from Texas to Michigan, and produced the first-ever map of election law vulnerabilities — showing where losing candidates can exploit state laws to challenge legitimate results. Grounded in deep state-level relationships and cross-ideological credibility, we anticipate threats and deliver solutions where democracy is most at risk. Voting Rights Lab is seeking a State Communications Manager to support earned media, digital, and content creation for state legislative and partnership programs aimed at securing, protecting, and expanding voting rights for all Americans. This role will be assigned to specific campaign states and work collaboratively with state teams that include policy and advocacy experts to execute a variety of communications strategies and tactics. This position is housed within the Communications Department and requires strong thinking and writing skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with various stakeholders to serve as a communications specialist and engaging content creator. Voting Rights Lab is a fully remote organization, and this position can be based anywhere in the United States. This position will require occasional travel, representing about 15% of the time. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Develop and execute state-specific communications strategies to support state legislative and policy campaign plans, in collaboration with advocacy, policy, and communications staff. Work closely with state campaign teams, monitor local and state media coverage to identify trends and opportunities, and provide guidance on how to best use communications tactics to achieve stated policy goals. Provide communications and digital content creation support to a set of campaign states, including drafting and editing op-eds, LTEs, press releases, media advisories, newsletters, blogs, social media posts, call scripts, policy analysis, fact sheets, and talking points. Support and manage state and local earned media strategies, including pitching reporters, organizing and hosting media briefings, preparing press-focused materials, and building relationships with state and local reporters in target states. Develop and deploy state-level messaging that aligns with stated policy goals and aligns with the organization’s core national narrative. Support state and local partner organizations, election officials, and key spokespeople in developing communications strategies and materials. Provide members of the communications team with insight and expertise on state campaign strategies and developments. Support spokespersons with talking points, messaging, and interview guides. Edit and review state-specific policy and advocacy products, ensuring consistent alignment with the organization’s voice and brand. Draft narratives and summaries of the organization’s state-level advocacy, policy, and communications work for internal and external use. Support and engage in national strategy and planning, and manage projects as assigned Required experience: A minimum of four years of relevant communications experience with a proven track record of managing communications campaigns or projects Proven communication skills, both verbal and written Strong analytical and interpersonal skills Attention to detail Strong track record of working as part of strategy-specific teams Experience managing a multi-step, time-sensitive content production and review processes across diverse teams and departments Desired experience: Experience working on communications campaigns at the state level for nonprofits, government agencies, or political campaigns Experience working on or knowledge of democracy and/or voting/elections issues Experience working in or knowledge of state legislative processes Experience communicating on behalf of multiple brands, as well as communicating on behalf of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations Experience working across digital platforms, including Substack, WordPress, and Mailchimp Experience working in Canva and other graphic design tools Experience working in a remote environment Salary and benefits: We value our staff by offering competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, detailed below. The State Communications Manager is in the Manager pay band, and the hiring range for this position is $70,000-$90,000 per year. The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may also vary depending on the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
