Work Arrangement: Hybrid eligible, three days/week onsite subject to operational needs. Budgeted Salary: The budgeted base salary range for this position is $88,000 to $93,000 annually. The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 24 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university’s largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day. Department/Program Description: The Program in Data Science is the new interdisciplinary undergraduate major in Data Science that launched in September 2022, offering a B.S. in Data Science (formerly named Mathematical and Computational Science), B.A. in Data Science and Social Systems, and a B.A. Data Science for Artistic and Cultural Analysis. The program’s mission is to provide students with an analytical and quantitative foundation for tackling data driven problems in science, industry, and society. The curriculum includes courses in mathematics, computer science, statistics, engineering, and the social sciences. Students also have the opportunity to pursue research or other creative projects within the major as part of their capstone requirement. Brief Position Summary: The Program in Data Science undergraduate interdisciplinary program administered by the Department of Statistics is seeking a Student Services Officer (SSO) to work closely with the department’s faculty and administrative team members and staff from central offices to provide students with necessary support for their academic success. This is a unique position handling content at the forefront of emerging and in-demand markets in tech and is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong administrative skills to work closely with Stanford undergraduates. The curriculum covers key courses in computer science, operations research, mathematics, statistics, and probability, plus individualized programs of study. The Data Science major will offer three distinct programs leading to two BAs or one BS, with oversight by separate faculty bodies. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Student Services, the SSO is a key member of the administrative team, supporting approximately 200 undergraduate majors and minors, as well as supporting aspects of student services for the Department of Statistics, which may include course and classroom scheduling and Bulletin updates. The SSO advises current and prospective data science (DS) majors (including Honors) and minors on degree requirements, planning their program of study, and appropriate course substitutions. The SSO maintains all academic records and monitors degree progress, which includes student fulfillment of major requirements, and provides approval recommendations to the faculty leadership team for graduating seniors. The ideal candidate should possess a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and customer-focused mindset and perform with a high level of professionalism, flexibility, discretion, judgment, diplomacy, and tact. The SSO will work with the DS faculty on the development of new processes and policies to manage this rapidly growing major more effectively. This includes, but is not limited to, providing recommendations on procedural changes, major requirements and curriculum updates. The SSO will hire, train, and manage part-time student workers (Peer Advisors) who will assist with advising, degree progress, and event coordination. Stanford’s Department of Statistics is the top-ranked statistics department in the nation, dedicated to research and student training in statistical methodology and in probability. The department is also very active in the development of these methodologies to advance other fields in the sciences and in medicine. Preferred Qualifications: Additional highly preferred knowledge and qualifications for this position includes: Stanford University’s policies and systems knowledge Student services experience in higher education Core Duties : Oversee, review and administer student records by analyzing data, counseling students and providing recommendations that require interpretation and influence decisions. Make exceptions on issues of eligibility, course enrollment and program requirements. Develop recommendations and collaborate with staff, faculty and other offices to resolve programmatic issues within the school and across functional units, (such as strategizing to ensure optimal enrollment). Provide advice to students on a range of issues, including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc., to guide them in making appropriate choices and decisions. Apprise students of research, fellowship and scholarship opportunities. Participate in related student recruitment and selection. Provide first line response to identify students in crisis and refer to appropriate resources, as needed. Collect and analyze data from multiple sources including student feedback, surveys, trend reports, and data analytics. Prepare and summarize reports and make recommendations to enhance offerings, such as programs and courses and to influence current processes and policies. Develop, analyze, influence and review, policies, processes and programs by incorporating feedback and trend data learned from first-line interactions with students. Advise manager and team on policy updates and provide recommendation for implementation of changes. Identify trends, perform needs analysis, and participate in the implementation and testing of new technology. May develop marketing materials and strategies for program activities and outreach functions. Assist in planning and developing webinars, education fairs and other external functions. May provide oversight with the administration of financial processes such as financial reimbursements, data entry, reviewing terms and conditions regarding contracts, understanding vendor requirements, and following up and resolving issues. May train and supervise other staff, volunteers, student and temporary workers. Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Strong written and verbal communication skills. Basic computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite. Basic analysis and problem solving skills. Customer service skills. Relevant computer systems/technology experience. Understanding of financial transactions. Ability to learn and understand compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
