The Team You're Joining

We have been building a network with stakeholders in Japan for several years, and we have finally reached the stage of establishing our Japanese corporation. Several of our members are already working in Japan across our Public Finance, Steel, and Communications teams, and we warmly welcome those who wish to help advance low-carbon manufacturing in Japan.
The Program Unit leads and supports research, policy advocacy, and campaign activities across five key sectors driving greenhouse gas emissions: Public Finance, Methane & HFCs, Steel, Shipping, and Forests & Land Use, aiming to build the institutional foundations and social momentum necessary for a green transition. At least one position will be hired for each team.

Program Areas

Public Finance: major public financial institutions continue to drive fossil fuel expansion through lending and investment practices. You will research the financial and environmental challenges of Japan's fossil fuel based public finance and build relationships with relevant stakeholders to incentivize a renewable energy transition. Methane: cutting methane emissions, which carries over 80 times the warming potential of CO2, is one of the fastest ways to slow climate change. You will conduct field research on Japan's energy industry and policies, engage with stakeholders across government and industry, and execute methane reduction projects. Steel: the steel industry is the largest industrial source of greenhouse gas emissions, and transitioning to low carbon production is essential. You will analyze steel related policies and data, collaborate with Japanese government and industry stakeholders including steelmakers, and support project planning and execution in Japan. (Keyword: decarbonization of the steel industry)
Shipping: the shipping industry must rapidly shift from fossil fuel powered vessels to green fuel vessels. You will analyze policies related to Japan's shipping industry, collaborate with stakeholders including central and local governments, shipping companies, fuel suppliers, and ports, and support campaign planning and execution in Japan. (Keyword: green fuel transition in shipping)
Forests & Land Use: this team challenges policies and corporate practices that drive deforestation at the intersection of forestry, energy, and agriculture, working to stop the expansion of forest biomass and palm oil biofuels while protecting community rights. You will research and manage projects on the supply chains of deforestation and conflict risk commodities, including their environmental and social impacts. How You'll Contribute

Develop and implement strategies for industrial decarbonization and the green transition
Analyze policies and trends on how climate change affects industries
Engage with and build networks among stakeholders in Japan and internationally, including government, industry, and civil society
Support the planning and execution of project related campaigns
Assist with seminars and events that promote the green transition of industry
Prepare proposals, fundraising materials, and reports, and provide other related project support as needed
Liaise with the Korea office and other international offices to ensure projects in Japan align with organizational strategy and direction

Who We're Looking For

Native level proficiency in Japanese (JLPT N1 or equivalent)
Strong interest in and understanding of issues related to industry, climate, environment, energy, and policy
Strategic thinking and analytical skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders
Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams, as well as independently, including remote work
Experience writing academic papers such as a graduation thesis, or equivalent research and writing skills
Flexibility to handle a wide range of ad-hoc tasks
Ability to travel overseas as required
Business level proficiency in English (TOEIC 700 or above) or Korean (TOPIK Level 4 or above), applicable only to the Steel and Forests & Land Use teams

Nice to Have

3+ years of relevant professional experience in any field, or a master's degree or higher
English proficiency sufficient for drafting documents and leading meetings (TOEIC 700 or equivalent), or Korean proficiency (TOPIK Level 4 or equivalent)
Academic background or professional experience related to climate or energy
Work experience and understanding of government, corporate, media, or NGO environments

Workplace: hybrid, Tokyo office (CIC Tokyo, 15F Toranomon Hills Business Tower, 1 Chome-17-1 Toranomon, Minato City, Tokyo; 1 minute walk from Toranomon Hills Station on the Hibiya Line, 3 minute walk from Toranomon Station on the Ginza Line). Possible assignment to overseas offices, 4+ business trips per year including to Korea, and remote work available.
Compensation: annual salary starting from JPY 4.2 million, negotiable based on prior salary and experience. Annual salary system with no bonus; discretionary labor system applied, including overtime allowance equivalent to 40 hours per month.
Working hours: 9:00 to 18:00 (8 hours/day), flexible working system available. Holidays are Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. Paid leave is 20 days per year, prorated in the first year based on start date.
Benefits: social insurance coverage (health insurance, welfare pension, employment insurance, workers' compensation insurance), annual health check up subsidy, self development allowance of up to JPY 120,000 per year on a reimbursement basis, company laptop provided, and paid overtime meals for in office overtime work.
The role begins as a 1-year contract, with the possibility of a 1-year extension based on team feedback. Conversion to a permanent position will be considered after 2 years of continuous employment. Working visa sponsorship is available for successful candidates where needed. The employment contract will be managed through an EOR (Employer of Record) provider.

メタン：CO2の80倍以上の温暖化係数を持つメタンの削減は、気候変動を緩和する最も速い方法の一つです。日本のエネルギー産業や政策に関するフィールドリサーチを行い、政府・産業界のステークホルダーと連携し、メタン削減プロジェクトを実行していただきます。（キーワード：カット・メタン、ロー・メタン）
鉄鋼：鉄鋼産業は産業部門で最も多くの温室効果ガスを排出しており、低炭素生産プロセスへの転換が求められています。日本の鉄鋼産業に関する政策・データ分析を行い、政府や鉄鋼メーカーを含む産業界と協働し、日本国内でのプロジェクト企画・実行をサポートしていただきます。（キーワード：鉄鋼産業の脱炭素化）
海運：海運業は化石燃料船からグリーン燃料船への迅速な転換が求められています。日本の海運業に関する政策分析を行い、中央政府・自治体、海運会社、燃料サプライヤー、港湾などのステークホルダーと協働し、日本国内でのキャンペーン企画・実行を担っていただきます。（キーワード：海運業のグリーン燃料転換）
森林・土地利用：森林・エネルギー・農業の交差点における森林破壊を引き起こす政策や企業活動に対応し、森林バイオマスやパーム油由来のバイオ燃料の拡大阻止や地域社会の権利保護に取り組んでいます。森林破壊や紛争リスクを伴う商品のサプライチェーンおよび環境・社会的影響に関するリサーチと管理を担っていただきます。（キーワード：森林破壊サプライチェーンの転換）
