Why This Role Matters: The Transportation Technologist plays a key role in delivering practical, data-driven solutions that shape how people move within our communities. By supporting a wide range of multi-modal transportation projects, including traffic management plans and traffic control drawings, concept and functional level design and drafting, traffic impact assessments, and parking studies, this role helps ensure our work is grounded in strong implementable design and informed decision-making. Partnering closely with the broader Transportation team, the Technologist contributes to the foundation of each project through data collection, technical analysis, conceptual and functional drafting, and clear reporting. Their work directly supports the development of high-quality deliverables and competitive proposals, enabling us to provide thoughtful, efficient, and forward-looking transportation solutions for our clients. What You Bring to WATT: Post-secondary education in the field of civil / transportation / traffic engineering technology (ideally with a transportation focus) with the potential to obtain (or currently has) AScT designation or equivalent. Proficiency with Autocad and Civil 3D including development of plan views, profiles, surfaces, alignments, and cross sections. Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, as well as strong analytical and organization skills. Ability to work on several projects at one time for multiple project managers under tight deadlines, as well as work independently in the field. Familiarity with the BC Traffic Management Manual (2020 edition), TAC Geometric Design Manual, BC MoTT Supplement to TAC, and MMCD is considered an asset. Ability to understand the time and budget constraints at various levels of design and ability to scale back / increase efforts depending on project requirements. Working knowledge of transportation related software such as Synchro/SimTraffic, SIDRA, and HCS is considered an asset. Familiarity with cost estimating, interpreting construction drawings and tender documents is considered an asset A valid BC Drivers’ License is required. Access to a personal vehicle would be considered an asset, as this position may also be asked to support project data collection in the field. Mileage expenses are reimbursed. Able to lift and carry traffic counting equipment (up to approximately 18kg / 40 lbs), as well as work outside in all typical west coast weather conditions. What You Will Do AT WATT: Primarily supporting the preparation of traffic management plans and associated traffic control drawings including temporary roadway detours, traffic control set up design of devices and signage, portable signal timing plans, and working with contractors to understand their traffic control requirements during constructions. Prepare base maps from various sources including GIS, Google Earth, Surveys, etc. and utilize the base maps to create concept drawings for intersection and corridor improvements based on direction from engineers and planners. Concepts include vehicle lanes, shoulders, sidewalks, active transportation facilities, transit stops, transit exchanges, and parking lots. Utilize Vehicle Tracking or AutoTurn to prepare vehicle turning movement drawings for sites and intersections. Provide traffic analysis for intersections using Synchro, SIDRA, Vistro and/or HCS software Assisting with preparation of written materials and graphics to support projects, including letters, memos, and reports. Field work including data collection and site inspections. These may include manual intersection counts for periods of up to four hours at a time, as well as setting up, monitoring and taking down traffic count equipment, including road tubes, controllers and video cameras. Data entry and preliminary analysis/verification of collected transportation data in Excel, as well as viewing and tabulating information from intersection recorded video. Undertaking activities as directed to support client communications and stakeholder outreach, including attending client, community and Council meetings in a support role. Note these meetings may occur in the evenings and / or weekends. Assisting project managers with administrative tasks, such as file set up, project coordination and logistics. Travel across Vancouver Island region may be required, occasionally requiring overnight stays. Other duties as required. What Success Looks Like Within 6 Months Gains a solid understanding of WATT’s project types, tools, and standards. Contributes to projects through data collection and drafting with minimal direction. Produces clear, accurate deliverables and reliably meets deadlines. Collaborates effectively with the team and communicates progress proactively. Within 12 Months Delivers key components of traffic management plans and traffic control drawings including detour alignments with horizontal and vertical design. Provides client communications on traffic management plans and understands their requirements. Supports project coordination and working with other technologist and engineers. Is a dependable, go-to team member with strong technical and communication skills. Please Note: Watt Consulting Group Ltd.
