Position Overview The US Tax Preparer will prepare and review federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, businesses, and other entities based on the needs of assigned clients. This position will gather and analyze financial information, organize tax documents, calculate taxable income, identify applicable deductions and credits, and ensure tax returns are accurate, complete, and filed within applicable deadlines. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of U.S. tax preparation principles, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work with confidential financial information. This position is ideal for a tax preparer with experience supporting U.S. clients, accounting firms, tax preparation services, or small and mid-sized businesses. Key Responsibilities Depending on client requirements, responsibilities may include: Tax Return Preparation Prepare accurate federal, state, and local tax returns using professional tax preparation software. Prepare individual income tax returns, including Form 1040 and related schedules. Prepare business tax returns, including Forms 1065, 1120, and 1120-S, based on experience and client requirements. Assist with fiduciary, nonprofit, estate, gift, payroll, or sales tax returns when assigned. Enter tax information accurately from Forms W-2, 1099, K-1, 1098, and other supporting documents. Review prior-year tax returns to identify carryforwards, elections, estimated payments, credits, and other relevant tax items. Calculate taxable income, deductions, tax credits, estimated payments, and tax liabilities. Prepare federal and state tax extensions and estimated payment vouchers. Assist with amended returns and other corrective filings. Complete applicable federal and state forms, schedules, statements, and disclosures. Prepare returns for senior or manager review according to established internal deadlines. Address review comments promptly and accurately. Confirm that tax returns are complete and ready for electronic filing or client delivery. Assist with rejected electronic filings and correct identified errors for retransmission. Tax Workpapers and Documentation Organize client tax documents, financial statements, trial balances, and supporting schedules. Prepare clear, accurate, and review-ready tax workpapers. Reconcile tax documents to accounting records and prior-year returns. Prepare book-to-tax reconciliations and supporting tax adjustment schedules. Tie tax return amounts to source documents and workpapers. Identify missing, incomplete, duplicated, or inconsistent information. Prepare client information request lists and follow up on outstanding documents. Document tax calculations, assumptions, adjustments, and unresolved matters clearly. Maintain organized electronic files using the assigned client’s document-management system. Follow client-specific workpaper templates, naming conventions, and file-organization standards. Maintain complete supporting documentation for each prepared return. Protect confidential taxpayer and financial information at all times. Individual Tax Return Support Prepare Form 1040 returns and applicable schedules. Process wage, interest, dividend, capital gain, rental, business, and retirement income information. Prepare Schedule C, Schedule E, and other applicable individual tax schedules. Record itemized deductions, tax credits, estimated payments, and withholding information. Review brokerage statements and summarize investment transactions when required. Track capital loss, passive activity, charitable contribution, and other available carryforwards. Assist with multistate individual returns based on client requirements and candidate experience. Identify unusual transactions or missing information and escalate them to the assigned reviewer. Business Tax Return Support Import, enter, or review trial balance information in the assigned tax software. Map general ledger accounts to appropriate tax return classifications. Prepare book-to-tax adjustments and supporting schedules. Assist with depreciation, amortization, fixed asset, and cost basis schedules. Prepare applicable tax forms for partnerships, S corporations, and C corporations. Assist with partner and shareholder basis schedules when assigned. Prepare Schedule K-1 information and supporting allocation schedules. Review information provided for officers, shareholders, partners, and contractors. Identify significant changes from the prior year and communicate them to the reviewer. Assist with state business returns and multistate filings based on experience. Tax Season and Workflow Management Maintain accurate status updates for assigned tax returns. Prioritize assignments according to internal deadlines and statutory filing dates. Monitor outstanding client information and communicate potential delays promptly. Complete assigned returns within established productivity and quality standards. Participate in tax-season status meetings and virtual team check-ins. Coordinate with U.S. tax seniors, managers, and partners regarding open items. Manage multiple returns simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and organization. Communicate workload concerns before they affect deadlines. Follow the assigned client’s preparation, review, approval, and electronic filing processes. Provide additional availability during peak U.S. tax periods when required under the employment arrangement. Client and Team Collaboration Communicate professionally with U.S. tax professionals and internal team members. Prepare clear and concise questions regarding missing or unclear tax information. Request supporting documentation using client-approved communication methods. Provide timely updates on return status, open items, and review comments. Coordinate with bookkeepers and accountants to resolve discrepancies in client financial records. Participate in client training and technical development sessions. Apply feedback from reviewers to improve the quality of future work. Escalate complex or uncertain tax matters to the appropriate senior, manager, or partner. Perform other tax preparation and accounting duties based on the assigned client’s needs. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field. Previous experience preparing U.S. federal and state tax returns. Experience preparing Form 1040 individual income tax returns. Familiarity with Forms 1065, 1120, and 1120-S is preferred. Understanding of fundamental U.S. federal income tax concepts. Knowledge of common tax documents, including Forms W-2, 1099, K-1, and 1098. Experience preparing tax workpapers and reconciling supporting documentation. Familiarity with tax return extensions, estimated payments, and electronic filing procedures. Previous experience supporting U.S. clients or working with a U.S. CPA or tax firm is strongly preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and cloud-based document-management tools. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Excellent organizational and time-management abilities. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
