It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence. Description of Work The Tanning Branch Inspector ensures regulatory compliance in tanning facilities by conducting technical inspections and evaluating operations for adherence to state and federal requirements. The position provides a comprehensive perspective on tanning‑related issues by reviewing facility data, researching evolving technology, and consulting with subject‑matter professionals. Work includes determining violations, generating accurate inspection reports, and communicating findings clearly to facility owners. The inspector supports enforcement through timely follow‑up with non‑compliant facilities and maintains thorough knowledge of the health risks associated with tanning. The role also participates in scheduled emergency nuclear exercises four times per year, contributing technical expertise within the Branch’s program framework. This position is Home-based but will cover the Eastern region of North Carolina. Key Duties Include: – Conduct technical and professional inspections of tanning facilities to evaluate compliance with state and federal regulations. – Assess operations, equipment, and practices to determine violations and document findings with measurable accuracy. – Enter inspection data into designated systems, generate database reports, and review existing information for trends and compliance validation. – Research updated literature, technology developments, and regulatory changes to maintain current subject‑matter expertise. – Communicate inspection results and compliance expectations clearly and professionally to facility owners through written and verbal channels. – Interpret tanning rules and apply them consistently during inspections, evaluations, and enforcement actions. – Provide follow‑up communication to facilities that fail to respond to Notice of Violations letters to support timely corrective action. – Evaluate hazards and health risks associated with tanning when conducting inspections or addressing facility concerns. – Participate in emergency nuclear exercises four times per year as part of ongoing Branch preparedness activities. – Maintain comprehensive understanding of all Branch programs to provide informed perspectives on issues encountered in the field. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade Range: $47,703.00 - $83,479.00 Recruitment Range: $47,703.00 - $56,753.00 Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred: Expert proficiency conducting regulatory inspections of facilities, demonstrated through experience performing detailed technical evaluations, documenting findings, and determining violations within structured compliance frameworks. Advanced skill analyzing facility data by entering inspection results into tracking systems, generating accurate reports, and reviewing historical information to identify patterns and validate compliance status. Intermediate proficiency researching scientific and regulatory literature, supported by experience consulting with subject‑matter professionals to remain current on evolving tanning technology and revised regulatory requirements. Demonstrated experience interpreting and enforcing program rules through consistent application of state and federal tanning regulations, including follow‑up actions for facilities that fail to respond to violation notices. Strong capability communicating inspection results and technical guidance to facility owners, demonstrated through clear written correspondence, structured verbal discussions, and effective explanation of identified health risks associated with tanning. About the Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR): The Division of Health Service Regulation oversees medical, mental health and adult care facilities, emergency medical services, and local jails. About Radiation Protection Services: Radiation Protection Services (RPS) administers several programs in order to provide protection from the harmful effects of radiation for occupational workers, the public and the environment. The regulatory programs include x-ray, mammography, radioactive materials, and tanning. The non-regulatory programs include radon, fixed nuclear facility emergency response, and environmental monitoring efforts. Under the auspices of the Radiation Protection Commission, RPS strives to maintain a healthy balance between regulatory responsibility, environmental stewardship and customer service. The RPS staff members are continually striving to streamline processes and offer the regulated community every opportunity for compliance with the regulations in the North Carolina Radiation Protection Act 10A NCAC 15 .
