Provides technical mentorship to network engineering staff. Duties/Responsibilities: Responsible for end-to-end WAN design, implementation, support, and documentation. Platforms include firewalls, routers, and Layer 2 switching related to SD-WAN, point-to-point, and WAVE telecom circuits. Own BGP routing design and operations at scale — peering, transit, communities, traffic engineering, and route policy across carrier, cloud, and internal domains. Lead SD-WAN architecture and operations (Cato Networks), including site onboarding, policy design, overlay/underlay routing preference, and integration with security controls. Traffic routing, security, bandwidth, and QoS control on the WAN network Architect and manage cloud interconnect via Equinix Fabric and direct connections to AWS and other cloud providers Design and support data center fabric technologies including EVPN/VXLAN Engineering of diverse access fiber plant at ground stations and demarc extensions, including review of carrier KMZ route data to ensure physical path diversity Own network observability and SLA assurance using Kentik and related monitoring platforms — flow analytics, synthetic testing, capacity trending, anomaly detection, and customer-facing SLA reporting; troubleshoot WAN-related issues to rapid resolution Maintain WAN configuration and backups of WAN edge devices Test and turn-up of new WAN circuits with telco and ground station staff Partner with cybersecurity on segmentation, zero trust initiatives, and compliance-driven network controls (NIST 800-171, SOC 2) Produce and maintain architecture documentation, standards, and runbooks Lead vendor and carrier relationships: circuit procurement, escalations, and technology evaluation Interface with IT, other network engineers, and other departments as required Skills and Competencies: Technical Skills: WAN design: Expert experience with WAN architectures (MPLS, VPN, SD-WAN, MP-BGP, DIA, DWDM/wave services) Routing: Expert-level BGP — route reflectors, communities, path manipulation, multihoming, and production troubleshooting; Cisco IOS-XE/NX-OS at an expert level, multi-vendor experience (Arista, Juniper) a plus Data center fabric: Hands-on EVPN/VXLAN design and operations Network security: Firewall configurations, ACLs, segmentation, and threat mitigation Cloud connectivity: AWS VPC/Transit Gateway/Direct Connect and interconnection platforms such as Equinix Fabric; familiarity with Azure and Google Cloud connectivity options Monitoring and observability: Experience operating network monitoring/observability platforms (Kentik strongly preferred; NetFlow/sFlow/IPFIX analytics, SNMP, streaming telemetry, synthetic monitoring) in an environment with contractual SLAs Automation: Familiarity with network automation and configuration tools (Ansible, Python, NetBox, etc.) Optical: Has used leased wave technologies and able to design and turn up associated systems Physical Premises and Redundancy: Facility design: Understanding of data center design principles, power, cooling, and space planning Redundancy and resilience: Ability to design and implement redundant systems, including diverse facility entrances and carrier circuit diversity. Familiar with reading and interpreting KMZs of routes and ability to negotiate their best practice.
