The Government of the Northwest Territories is seeking an Assistant Director, Culture and Heritage to join the Culture and Heritage Division in Yellowknife on a 1-year term.

If you're an experienced museum or cultural heritage professional with a passion for leadership, public engagement, and preserving northern history, this is an opportunity to help shape one of the Northwest Territories' most important cultural institutions. You'll provide strategic leadership for the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, ensuring its exhibits, programs, collections, and visitor experiences continue to educate, inspire, and connect residents and visitors with the rich cultures and heritage of the North.

About the Role

Working closely with the Director, Culture and Heritage, you'll help lead the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. You'll oversee public education, museum collections and conservation, exhibit development, visitor services, and museum operations while building partnerships with Indigenous governments, community organizations, schools, tourism partners, and stakeholders across the Northwest Territories.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead public education, community outreach, and engagement initiatives that connect Northerners with their history and culture
  • Oversee museum collections, conservation, exhibit planning, and building operations
  • Develop partnerships with Indigenous organizations, schools, tourism operators, and community stakeholders

  • Lead projects and initiatives that enhance visitor experiences and promote the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre

Qualifications Required

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

  • A degree in Museum Studies, Education, Anthropology, or a related field
  • Five (5) years of experience working in a museum, archives, or other cultural institution
  • One (1) year of supervisory or team lead experience
  • Examples of cultural institutions include heritage centres, science centres, and art galleries.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
