This position provides guidance and support to section leaders in managing resources to address the ongoing needs of the division and to assure high-quality resolution of section responsibilities and critical work demands. The assistant director builds strong working relationships with colleagues in partner divisions at the Board and represents the division, the Board, or the System, on committees or in meetings with other divisions, the Reserve Banks, other agencies, professional conferences, and other outside groups. This position is located in Washington, DC. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Oversees sections supporting initiatives and programs related to operations (e.g. space, events), financial and human resources management (e.g. recruitment, hiring, professional development), project, program and portfolio management, communications, organizational development, design and performance, governance, information coordination and compliance, and overall organizational efficiency and effectiveness in the divisions of Monetary Affairs and Financial Stability. Provides leadership and support to section chiefs in managing section resources to address the ongoing needs of the divisions and to assure high-quality resolutions of section responsibilities and critical work demands. Works closely with the Associate Director to set the vision and goals of section programs. Partners closely with other divisions in considering practices and policies that affect similar jobs within the economics community and across the Board. Represents the Divisions, the Board, or the System as needed on matters of mutual concern related to these responsibilities. Continuously assesses the effectiveness of section priorities, processes, and programs in supporting the division’s mission. Considers how section-level priorities impact other sections in the wing and division, and communicates with other division leaders to deconflict agendas and understand dependencies and risks. Assists the chiefs in identifying topics and analysis relevant for senior officers. Contributes to the successful delivery of high-quality information to senior officers. Sponsors and leads strategic projects for the line, wing, division, or Board. Ensures section activities align with Board and division strategic priorities. Works with division leadership to understand business needs to set objectives and to select and prioritize projects. Contributes to the Board-related responsibilities of the division; keeps current on various operationally relevant topics; anticipates significant developments in these areas to ensure that the division and Board’s programs are competitive, cost-effective, and compliant; and supports section staff and other members of the division in applying this knowledge to Division and section policies, processes, and projects. Fosters open dialogue and promotes cooperation. Coaches, mentors, offers feedback, and supports chiefs and staff in identifying and resolving conflict. Fosters engagement and ensures that staff understand the connections between their work and the mission and priorities of the section, line, wing, division, and Board. Supports development of division priorities and communicates them, ensures accountability, and reviews work products to ensure they are well understood and completed within prescribed timeframes. Supports the division’s senior officers by providing information and analysis on personnel and financial policy interpretation and by contributing to the strategic direction of the division and the achievement of its objectives and priorities. Supports the chiefs in developing short- and long-term strategies for promoting progress of initiatives, including appropriate metrics for measuring outcomes against business goals. Minimum Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum Management Years of Experience: 5 years As an officer in the Division of Monetary Affairs (MA) and a member of the Monetary Affairs Advisory Group, the Assistant Director works closely with the Associate Director, deputy directors, and other officers to provide effective leadership, oversight, and governance of the division. In this capacity, the individual contributes to the development of division-wide strategies and priorities to continuously improve the culture and productivity of the division, further the professional development of staff and leaders, align resources and reduce friction points, facilitate the flow of information, and enhance employee engagement and communications. The assistant director oversees, guides, and directs the Operations and Resource Management section and the Front Office section in a manner that allows the teams to leverage their expertise and synergies that supports the division’s goals and strategic priorities. This officer must be able to take a broad view of division needs and how they interact. The assistant director substitutes for the associate director when appropriate, in matters relating to the area of responsibility within the division and in Board-wide leadership committees and efforts. The individual is a broad conceptual thinker with a practical orientation and an ability to translate complex concepts into practical applications. The individual has strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent written and oral communications skills, and excellent management and leadership abilities. As an officer in the MA division, the individual would promote the division’s model of leadership—within the division and across the Board—focused on maximizing the contribution, development, and accountability of all staff in the division. Additionally, as an officer, the individual would facilitate the strongest contributions of others by distributing authority, responsibility, and decision-making widely, providing feedback, encouraging initiative and creativity, giving others broad discretion for how to best carry out their jobs, and then holding them accountable for performing at a high level. Much of the work of MA is conducted by teams of staff. As a result, it is critical for officers in MA to promote close and effective working relationships among staff working together as a team. As part of this, officers must act in a way that builds trust and puts the needs and goals of the Board and the Division first. In particular, it is essential for officers to foster a work environment that allows staff in their lines and across the Division to reach their full potential. Some key examples of the types of behaviors that officers in MA should demonstrate in this area include: Demonstrating collegial, cooperative, and collaborative behaviors.
