Associate/Full Professor Department of Classics College of Liberal Arts & Sciences University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign The Classics Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time, tenured position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, with any research specialization in Classical Studies. Preference will be given to advanced Associate Professors and Full Professors. Exceptional candidates may be considered for the Robert D. Novak Chair of Western Civilization and Culture . The person hired will contribute to our highly successful general education curriculum by regularly teaching a large-enrollment class on Greek and Roman mythology as well as other courses in Classical Civilization and, depending on specialization, Greek, Latin, or material culture, at both undergraduate and graduate levels; the teaching load is 2-2. Preference will be given to applicants who have built an international reputation as a scholar, as well as a record of outstanding teaching, particularly in large format lecture classes. The successful candidate will contribute to the mission of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The appointee will be expected to maintain a distinguished publication record, teach effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels, perform administrative duties associated with our B.A, M.A., and Ph.D. programs, and participate in our department's activities in the areas of student mentorship, curricular innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and research and teaching record in Classics or a closely related field. In general, we will give higher priority to the overall originality and impact of applicants' work rather than to the area of specialization. Appointment Information The anticipated start date is August 16, 2027, but is flexible based on the successful applicant's needs. The budgeted salary range for the position is $100,000 to $120,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $120,000 to $165,000 at the Full Professor level, on a 9-month service basis paid over 12 months . The pay offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) their experience and qualifications, including years in rank; internal equity; and external market pay for comparable jobs. The person hired will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy. This position is eligible for sponsorship for work authorization, except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur the $100,000 fee.
