Job Summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, experienced band 5, or band 6, physiotherapist to work in the Specialist Surgery team at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. The team provides inpatient therapy services for the regional vascular surgery unit and a variety of other surgical specialties, including GI, ENT and urology.

You will join our dynamic team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy support workers to provide specialist assessment and holistic therapy across the surgical wards. Working with the multi-disciplinary team to promote recovery, and maximise independence, for patients following surgery or illness.

The role requires experience of working in an appropriate surgical specialty within an acute hospital setting, as well as excellent communication, organisation and clinical skills. The successful candidate will need to work flexibly within a large team and contribute to the appraisal and development of staff and students. In return you will gain support from the Band 7 team leaders and the opportunity to further develop your leadership, clinical, and service improvement skills.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

Main duties

You will be required to use therapeutic assessment and clinical reasoning skills to provide a high-quality physiotherapy service on the surgical wards at Heartlands Hospital.

Possessing excellent communication, prioritisation and organisational skills, you will have experience of working collaboratively with a surgical multidisciplinary team to deliver patient centred care.

Understanding the importance of timely, effective physiotherapy intervention to optimise patient outcomes you will complete all clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner whilst maintain associated records.

Assisting with supervision, education and co-ordination of band 5 therapists, generic therapy support workers, and students, you will contribute to the development and improvement of the specialist surgery therapy service.

You will participate in the 7-day working rota with the specialist surgery team, and the respiratory physiotherapy on call rota.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma / degree in Physiotherapy.
  • Registered with Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC).
  • A levels or equivalent qualification.
  • Good standard of general education including GCSE Maths and English grade C and above.
  • Evidence of CPD including recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality.

Desirable

  • Member of specialist interest group.
  • Attendance at Clinical Educators course.

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrates clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients within this speciality / within the NHS with experience of elderly and frail elderly, respiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Experience of working on a physiotherapy on-call service.
  • Experience of working with student physiotherapists and assistants.
  • An ability to analyse clinical and non clinical complex facts and situations, which require the interpretation and comparison of a range of options.
  • An ability to plan, organise, formulate and adjust complex plans.
  • An ability to supervise and delegate work to physiotherapists, assistants and students.

Desirable

  • It is desirable that the candidate will have had some experience within speciality area.
