Job Summary

The post holder will provide strong clinical leadership for a defined group of staff to maintain and improve standards of care and client outcomes. They will promote best practice which inspires and motivates others, empowering them to ensure all staff, within their areas of responsibility, have the authority and support to provide agreed standards of care and service delivery to clients and managers. The post holder will mostly be based at Good Hope Hospital but will be expected to work across all sites of the Trust.

The post holder will contribute to improving the quality of working life by the effective provision of a comprehensive Occupational Health and wellbeing service to the staff of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and other contracted clients; and promoting the health, safety and wellbeing of employees in line with the organisations objectives. The post holder may be responsible for the management of a contract of Occupational Health Services to other NHS Trusts and/or local organisations external to the NHS.

The post holder will be responsible for their own caseload and will be a Specialist Practitioner (or equivalent) in Occupational Health. They will be expected to undertake additional duties that fall within their area of competence as needs arise.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

As a Senior Occupational Health Advisor, you will play a key role in delivering a high-quality Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service to UHB staff and external clients. Working as a senior nurse within the team, you will manage a varied caseload, providing specialist occupational health assessments, management referral consultations, health surveillance, immunisation programmes and fitness for work advice, while supporting staff health, safety and wellbeing.

The successful candidate will provide senior nursing and professional support to Occupational Health colleagues, contribute to service development, audit and governance activities, and help ensure compliance with SEQOHS standards and best practice. You will work closely with managers, HR, Infection Prevention, Health and Safety teams and other stakeholders, providing expert advice on complex occupational health matters.

We are looking for an experienced Occupational Health practitioner with excellent communication, leadership and clinical decision-making skills. You will be able to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, build effective working relationships and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement, innovation and high standards of care.

The Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service operates Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm. The post holder will be predominantly based at Good Hope Hospital, with a requirement to work across all UHB sites as required to support service delivery.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Adult NMC Registered Nurse
  • Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
  • Post registration specialist Diploma/Degree related to Occupational Health (OH)

Desirable

  • Level 3 on NMC Register (Specialist Community and Public Health Nurse) or equivalent
  • Membership to a national accredited OH body

Experience

Essential

  • Significant post-registration nursing experience including Occupational Health experience.
  • Recent Occupational Health experience within a healthcare or comparable occupational health environment.
  • Evidence of managing a team
  • Ability to analyse complex problems, develop and implement practical solutions to address them.
  • Ability to prioritise work programmes in the face of competing demands.
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of personal and team accountability with a clear understanding of boundaries around delegated authority.
  • Knowledge of health risks to NHS staff and other service users

Desirable

  • Working knowledge of Occupational Health software such as cority
  • Have relevant up to date knowledge, training, and experience of undertaking the role of a senior occupational health advisor

Additional Criteria

Essential

  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills written and verbal providing specialist expert knowledge when appropriate
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills with good listening skills.
  • Strong sense of commitment to openness, honesty and integrity in undertaking the role.
  • In times of demand some flexibility may be required around working hours/place of work to meet the needs of the service occasionally.

Desirable

  • Car Owner/Driver with access to a vehicle
  • Ability to assist in the development of, & deliver training in, health & safety education. Across a wide range of staff groups both large and small
