Job Summary

An exciting new opportunity has arisen at University Hospitals of Birmingham for a highly specialist physiotherapist to join our supportive and innovative team. The postholder will be responsible for managing their own caseload of patients within our complex breathlessness multidisciplinary service, working alongside our two existing highly experienced band 7 physiotherapists.

It is an opportunity to work within a supportive and specialist MDT in a service that is expanding and developing in order to address a previously unmet need within the BSOL area. The post involves advanced assessment and treatment of patients with complex breathlessness including those with suspected or confirmed breathing pattern disorder. Patients referred to this service often have a highly complex presentation and may have associated factors such as inducible laryngeal obstruction, excessive dynamic airway collapse or asthma. Physiotherapy is an integral part of this service and alongside the MDT you will ensure that patients receive a comprehensive and holistic assessment and treatment plan.

You will need experience working as a qualified band 6 or band 7 physiotherapist in an acute hospital setting, with experience of managing multiple respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchiectasis, breathing pattern disorder.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

You should be able to work as a highly specialist, autonomous practitioner with a clear passion in assessing and managing complex breathlessness within an outpatient respiratory setting. Alongside this you will be involved in providing specialist level training to the wider MDT when required and may also be asked to attend the regional complex breathlessness network meetings networking with physiotherapists working in similar roles across the country. Evidence of strong organisational, communication and leadership skills are essential to compliment your advanced physiotherapy knowledge and skills. You should be passionate about providing effective patient centred care, as well as being highly enthusiastic about service development of respiratory services

You will have the opportunity to work alongside other highly specialist staff such as speech and language therapists, psychologists and Consultants with a specialist interest in this field. There are opportunities to be involved in data collection and research within this area and to attend relevant national meetings and conferences.

The clinics run in both hospital and community centres and you may be expected to work at more than one site across the week with advanced notice.

Applicants must be prepared to participate in the Physiotherapy Out of Hours On-Call rota and 7 day working within the respiratory teams.

We are open to discuss flexible working arrangements as suited to the post.
