Nabat is seeking a highly experienced
Blue Carbon and MRV Scientific Consultant
to lead the scientific design of our mangrove carbon dMRV framework.
This is not a research position—it is an implementation-focused engagement. You will produce the scientific methodologies, technical specifications, and carbon accounting framework that will be directly translated into AI models and software by our engineering and data science teams.
The successful consultant will have deep expertise in mangrove blue carbon, voluntary carbon markets, MRV systems, and carbon accounting methodologies, with demonstrated experience delivering validated carbon projects, preferably within the GCC.
Key Responsibilities
Carbon Standards Assessment
Evaluate leading blue carbon methodologies and carbon standards including Verra VCS, Gold Standard, Plan Vivo, ISO 14064-2, ICR, Isometric, and other applicable frameworks.
Recommend the optimal methodology for Nabat's platform with supporting technical rationale.
Assess interoperability between standards and future scalability across geographies.
Define certification pathways, registry considerations, Article 6 compatibility, and market acceptance.
MRV Methodology Design
Design a complete Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) framework for mangrove blue carbon.
Define carbon pools, project boundaries, sampling methodologies, field protocols, monitoring frequency, and QA/QC procedures.
Develop field and laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Specify remote sensing requirements and integration with field verification.
Carbon Accounting Framework
Design implementation-ready carbon calculation methodologies.
Define carbon stock equations, baseline calculations, uncertainty analysis, leakage methodologies, buffer pool calculations, and credit issuance logic.
Produce workflow diagrams and technical specifications suitable for direct software implementation.
Co-benefits & Safeguards
Develop biodiversity monitoring requirements.
Define safeguard frameworks including FPIC, grievance mechanisms, and community benefit documentation.
Ensure alignment with high-integrity carbon frameworks and institutional buyer expectations.
Technical Documentation
Produce implementation-ready documentation including:
Carbon standards assessment
MRV methodology specifications
Carbon calculation logic
Technical data schemas
QA/QC framework
Validation requirements
Risk and gap assessments
Final technical presentation and handover
Collaboration
Work closely with Nabat's ecology, AI, engineering, and product teams.
Participate in weekly progress meetings.
Present recommendations and technical decisions to company leadership.
Provide scientific guidance throughout the engagement.
Required Qualifications
Advanced degree (MSc or PhD preferred) in Environmental Science, Ecology, Forestry, Marine Science, Carbon Accounting, Climate Science, or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience developing, validating, or auditing blue carbon or nature-based carbon projects.
Proven experience delivering at least one validated carbon project within the GCC.
Deep expertise in mangrove ecology, biomass estimation, soil organic carbon, hydrology, and blue carbon science.
Strong knowledge of voluntary carbon market methodologies and registry requirements.
Experience with MRV systems and greenhouse gas accounting.
Familiarity with remote sensing technologies for mangrove monitoring.
Experience translating scientific methodologies into technical specifications for software or engineering teams.
Excellent technical writing and documentation skills.
Preferred
Experience engaging directly with carbon standards organizations.
Knowledge of Article 6 and corresponding adjustment requirements.
Experience working alongside AI, GIS, geospatial analytics, or data science teams.
Familiarity with ICVCM Core Carbon Principles and institutional buyer due diligence.
