Position Summary: The Energy Meteorologist will have multiple weather-related roles as necessary by system circumstances that impact system load and reliability requirements. The primary responsibilities for this role are weather forecasting, short-term load forecasting for use in unit commitment and generation dispatch planning, high-impact weather event support, and communicating weather forecasts and information to various teams across the company on a routine basis. Additional enterprise weather support will occur outside of these major roles, in areas such as climate/climate change, fulfilling data requests, performing data analysis and supporting wildfire mitigation programs. The position is also responsible for interacting with various functions across the company and all levels of management. The Energy Meteorologist will perform daily tasks on weekdays plus provide weekend/holiday support on a rotating basis. Job Responsibilities: Weather Forecasting Develops an understanding of operational weather forecasting for each of the Duke Energy jurisdictions Analyzes and monitors weather forecasts and various weather models to provide operational weather data and reports that support operational decision-making during all critical weather conditions. Produces hourly weather forecasts that are used as inputs to short-term load forecast models. Produces and disseminates operational weather reports, including daily weather outlooks that identify potential risks for high-impact weather events. Assists with long-term seasonal forecasts to promote preparedness and proactive resource allocation. Supports enterprise wildfire forecasting and mitigation initiatives. Short-Term Load Forecasting Develops an understanding of load shapes, system peaks/valleys and how various weather parameters influence load on an hourly/daily basis throughout the year. Monitors and evaluates load forecast model performance, performing similar-day weather and load analysis and publishing hourly load forecasts for each jurisdiction. Produces short-term load forecasts for system optimization, including economic dispatch of generation, power trading and natural gas trading. Major Storm / High-Impact Weather Support Produces and disseminates weather forecasts for high-impact events, such as hurricanes, severe storms, windstorms and winter storms, that are expected to affect each of the Duke Energy jurisdictions. Supports pre-storm modelling of outages and restoration resource requirements. Monitors and reports to leaders real-time and forecast weather conditions on a recurring basis during storm and critical weather events across all jurisdictions. Participates in leadership/planning storm conference calls across the enterprise to communicate the weather/outage forecasts, changes to the forecasts, and current forecasts risks, and assist with the decision-making process. Required/Basic Qualifications for Energy Meteorologist Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science In addition to required degree, two (2) or more years related work experience Required/Basic Qualifications for Senior Energy Meteorologist Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science In addition to required degree, five (5) or more years related work experience Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field. 2+ years of related work experience. Desired Qualifications: Advanced degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Emergency Management, or a related field. American Meteorological Society (AMS) Certified Consulting Meteorologist. Demonstrated experience in weather forecasting, preferably in the central or eastern US, using numerical weather prediction models and various types of weather data. Familiarity with Numerical Weather Prediction Models and aptitude for working with the statistical analysis of data and gridded atmospheric data sets. Experience with Energy, Trading & Renewable energy technologies Experience in Short or Long Term (Load, Wind, and/or Solar generation, Uncertainty) forecasting using artificial neural network (ANN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), machine learning, and/or regression forecasting techniques. Experience in power systems forecasting. Understanding of commodities markets and global impacts of weather on Electric and Natural Gas Products. Python, MATLAB, R, Grads or similar programming experience Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT, etc) Strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Requires strong verbal and written communication skills given the number of teams and functions the meteorological function interacts with on a daily basis. Strives to continually develop and improve job-related technical knowledge and skill. Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each of them within specified timeframes Working Conditions Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. The Energy Meteorologist’s onsite location will be in Charlotte, NC.
