About the Role

The role spans applications including magnetic sensing and inertial navigation, working closely with physicists, embedded systems engineers, and software engineers to turn scientific requirements into robust hardware.

You'll take a lead role on timing closure, verification, and technical direction, + oversight of outsourced FPGA development.

What You'll Be Doing

• Architect, design, and implement FPGA-based digital hardware for quantum sensing platforms & systems.
• Develop and maintain RTL designs in VHDL/Verilog for real-time signal acquisition, processing, and control
• Lead hardware/software co-design, interfacing FPGAs with ADCs/DACs, high-speed serial links, and embedded processors
• Implement and optimise high-speed data pipelines (filtering, triggering, DSP chains) within FPGA fabric
• Lead timing closure, resource optimisation, and verification of FPGA designs, including simulation and hardware-in-the-loop test
• Develop and maintain testbenches and verification worlds.
• Supervise outsourced FPGA development and contribute to technical reviews
• Prepare technical documentation including design specs, test reports, and user manuals
• Debug, validate, and optimise performance using lab equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyser, spectrum analyser)
• Participate in laboratory and field testing of integrated systems

What We're Looking For

Essential:

• Strong proficiency in VHDL and/or Verilog for FPGA design
• Experience with major FPGA toolchains (Xilinx Vivado, Intel/Altera Quartus)
• Experience with high-speed interfaces (JESD204B/C, SerDes, DDR memory controllers)
• Strong understanding of timing closure, clock domain crossing, and resource optimisation
• Experience interfacing FPGAs with ADCs/DACs and analogue frontends
• Familiarity with communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, PCIe)
• Experience with hardware bring-up, debugging, and validation
• Proficiency with version control (Git, SVN)
• Experience with simulation/verification tools (ModelSim, QuestaSim) and testbench development
• Experience with scripting (Python, Tcl) for design automation and test
• Strong analytical skills and ability to work across physics, electronics, and software disciplines
• Degree (Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
• 5+ years' relevant experience in FPGA or digital hardware design, ideally within R&D or sensing

Desirable:

• Experience with soft-core processors (MicroBlaze, NIOS II) and FPGA/SoC platforms (Xilinx Zynq)
• Experience with High-Level Synthesis (HLS)
• Experience with schematics, PCB-level considerations, and signal integrity
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines for hardware/firmware validation
