About The Role
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated IT Support Engineer to join our Desktop Support team at EMBL Headquarters in Heidelberg. In this role, you will be responsible for providing high-quality first-level and desktop support to a diverse, international user community. Your expertise will ensure the seamless operation of desktop environments across macOS, Windows, and Linux platforms, as well as mobile devices. You will play a vital role in managing system and software deployments, configuring user environments, and troubleshooting hardware and software issues. This position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to EMBL’s scientific training initiatives by maintaining IT training environments within the EMBL Advanced Training Centre. The ideal candidate will be service-oriented, proactive, and possess strong technical skills, with a focus on delivering exceptional user support and continuous improvement of IT services.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a minimum of two years of professional experience in an IT support environment, demonstrating a solid understanding of desktop and mobile device management across multiple operating systems. A degree in computer science or an equivalent practical background is required. Hands-on experience supporting Windows, Linux, and macOS systems, including deployment, configuration, and troubleshooting, is essential. Familiarity with enterprise tools such as Microsoft SCCM, JAMF Pro, and virtualization technologies like VMware Horizon is highly desirable. Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory, Exchange, and Microsoft 365 services is also important. The candidate should possess excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and organizational skills, complemented by strong communication abilities and fluency in English. Additional skills such as proficiency in German and experience with enterprise software deployment will be considered advantageous.
Responsibilities
- Provide professional desktop support for macOS, Windows, and Linux systems, as well as mobile devices, ensuring timely resolution of user issues.
- Manage system and software deployments utilizing enterprise tools such as Microsoft SCCM and JAMF Pro to streamline updates and configurations.
- Configure and maintain user environments, including accounts, network access, printing services, and email configurations, to ensure optimal user productivity.
- Diagnose and resolve hardware and software issues across various supported platforms, applying troubleshooting best practices.
- Deliver a responsive and customer-focused helpdesk service, prioritizing user satisfaction and effective communication.
- Track, document, and manage support requests in line with IT service management standards to ensure transparency and accountability.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of IT services, infrastructure, and user experience through proactive initiatives and feedback.
