  • Competitive pension, benefits, subsidized housing, and relocation support
  • Join a purpose-driven organization shaping the future of safe, affordable housing across Nunavut for generations to come

About the Organization

Join a team dedicated to providing safe and affordable housing across Nunavut. We are looking for skilled and culturally sensitive professionals who are committed to making a meaningful impact in Northern communities. As independent, community-focused units, Local Housing Organizations (LHOs) operate within the framework of the Inuit Societal Values and strive to provide most of the day-to-day services associated with program delivery to individuals and families. The 25 LHOs partner with the Nunavut Housing Corporation, to deliver housing programs and manage assets.

The Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) is an agency of the Government of Nunavut with a mandate to create, co-ordinate, and administer housing programs to provide fair access to a range of affordable housing options to families and individuals in Nunavut. NHC has recently launched The Nunavut 3000 Strategy, (www.igluliuqatigiingniq.ca) which is a collaboration between the government and its partners to deliver 3,000 new units across the housing continuum by 2030.

About the Opportunity

Local Housing Organizations, in partnership with the NHC, are looking for multiple full-time Maintenance Managers/Forepersons based in various Nunavut communities.

Reporting to the Local Housing Organization's Housing Manager or General Manager, this role is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing daily maintenance operations for social housing assets, while leading diverse maintenance teams and ensuring work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in alignment with Inuit Societal Values.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Providing supervisory leadership and technical expertise to maintenance staff and supervisors
  • Supporting culturally respectful service delivery by working collaboratively with communities and learning Inuit culture and societal values
  • Planning and administering preventative and corrective maintenance programs across housing assets
  • Coordinating and overseeing minor O&M-funded projects and monitoring client capital projects
  • Conducting semi-annual inspections to assess building conditions, maintenance quality, and compliance with plans
  • Identifying maintenance priorities, addressing deficiencies, and updating maintenance plans as required
  • Managing inventory levels, ordering materials, and coordinating major annual resupply orders
  • Reviewing and applying maintenance standards in collaboration with the Nunavut Housing Corporation
  • Administering and applying collective agreement provisions for bargaining unit employees
  • Assessing training needs and recommending development opportunities for tradespeople and apprentices
  • Preparing scopes of work, material lists, cost estimates, and processing invoices using Excel and related tools
  • Planning, monitoring, and reporting on maintenance operating and capital budgets

About You

To qualify, you will need a Journeyperson Certification in a relevant residential or commercial building trade (such as carpentry, oil burner mechanic, maintenance plumbing, or HVAC) and a valid Class 5 driver’s licence. A minimum of five years’ experience at the journeyperson level, combined with at least five years’ proven experience supervising maintenance teams, will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Experience supervising crews of five or more workers in a maintenance or construction environment
  • Strong administrative skills, including using Excel, processing invoices, estimating jobs, and preparing scopes of work
  • Project management experience with exposure to tendering, procurement, and contractor coordination
  • Experience managing maintenance budgets and monitoring operating and capital expenditures
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance planning and asset lifecycle management
  • Experience working in remote, northern, or community-based environments

As our ideal candidate, you will possess strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills, along with clear communication abilities and sound judgment. You will be culturally respectful, adaptable, and open to learning about Inuit culture and Inuit Societal Values, with the ability to lead diverse teams in a collaborative and community-focused setting.

This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for an experienced maintenance professional who is motivated to make a meaningful impact by ensuring safe, well-maintained housing for Northern communities while contributing to long-term, sustainable housing outcomes across Nunavut.

About the Benefits

The successful incumbent will be rewarded with a competitive annual salary ranging from $119,439.88 to $143,624.81, depending on the community within Nunavut, based on skills and experience. You will also receive a great range of employee benefits, including:

  • A Northern Allowance of $16,450.00 to $24,860.00 per annum, depending on location
  • Enrolment in the Pension Plan and Insurance
  • Access to company vehicle
  • Subsidized housing
  • 3 weeks of vacation to start
  • Relocation assistance

The Nunavut Housing Corporation and Local Housing Organizations are committed to building a representative workforce that reflects and understands the communities they serve. Priority consideration will be given to Nunavut Inuit.

If you are seeking a dynamic role where no two days are the same and where your work makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others, this is an opportunity to build a rewarding career in Nunavut - apply today!

This position is open until filled. Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
