Relocation Assistance (based on eligibility) Nursing Care Assistant I/Health Unit Coordinator - Special Care Nursery The Special Care Nursery (SCN) provides specialized care for newborns with mild to moderate medical needs, including prematurity and respiratory or feeding challenges. A skilled multidisciplinary team delivers advanced monitoring and treatment while supporting growth and development. Family involvement and education are key priorities to ensure a smooth transition home. What you will do: The Nursing Assistant (NA) works with the Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to help care for patients. They provide basic hands-on care, such as helping patients stay comfortable, and follow tasks assigned by the RN or LPN. The NA also helps take care of the unit by keeping it clean, stocked, and organized. They assist with caring for patients who are sick, follow proper hygiene practices, and always respect each patient’s privacy, dignity, and cultural background. NAs are expected to follow all policies, respond appropriately in emergencies, and communicate clearly with the care team. They document care in the electronic health record and may complete simple clerical tasks. This role also includes helping maintain equipment and supplies, sometimes independently. NAs typically work NCA I shifts at least 25% of the time. Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for procedures; assist nurses and providers as needed Collect and record patient information; report updates to the RN/LPN Provide daily patient care (feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility support) Help keep patients comfortable by turning, positioning, and offering water and meals Take and record vital signs and intake/output; report any changes in condition Assist with exams by positioning patients, weighing, and changing simple dressings Perform blood sugar checks (with training) and report results Support patient admissions, discharges, and transport Follow infection control practices and use protective equipment Collect and handle patient specimens for routine testing Keep patient care areas clean, stocked, and organized Help reinforce education provided by nurses or providers Assist with simple wound care (over 48 hours old), if trained Complete clerical tasks in the electronic medical record (EMR), including orders and documentation Maintain patient charts and upload documents into the EMR Schedule appointments, manage task lists, and access patient records Help coordinate communication systems for nursing staff Maintain required training and support learning for others Perform other related duties as needed What you will need: Education N/A Experience N/A Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Service Regulation with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, which typically takes place during the first week of employment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients. Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health and safety precautions applicable to work in a hospital. Working knowledge of the organization and physical layout of the hospital. Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions. Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital staff. Working knowledge of principles and practices of providing non- professional bedside patient care. Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.
