READY FOR MORE CONTROL OVER YOUR CAREER — AND YOUR TIME?
OPHTHALMOLOGIST – PRIVATE PRACTICE OPPORTUNITY IN SOUTH-WEST FRANCE (RELOCATION)
This opportunity is for ophthalmologists currently based in the UK who are willing to relocate to Albi, France.
Choose your working days and hours | No nights, weekends or on-call commitments | Plan your own holidays | €1,000–€3,500 indicative gross professional income per clinical day | Relocation support
Imagine an ophthalmology career with genuine control over when you work and take your holidays.
No NHS appraisal cycle. No GMC revalidation requirement for your French practice. No e-portfolio. No annual job-planning round. No hospital rota.
French professional-registration and continuing-development obligations still apply, but the private-practice model is very different from working within a large hospital system.
Support from someone who has made the same move
Dr Alina Stalker worked for many years within the NHS before relocating to France and establishing Centre d’Ophtalmologie Votre Vision.
She understands first-hand the professional, administrative and personal challenges of leaving the NHS, registering in France and building a new life abroad. The successful candidate will receive practical, personalised support in English throughout the transition.
Centre d’Ophtalmologie Votre Vision is an independent, doctor-owned private clinic with the infrastructure, patient demand and experienced team already in place.
The opportunity includes:
• an established and growing patient base;
• flexible full-time or part-time working arrangements;
• modern, fully equipped consultation rooms;
• a comprehensive and recent diagnostic platform;
• experienced orthoptists and medical secretaries;
• English-speaking doctors and management;
• management of appointments, billing and routine administration;
• freedom to develop your own clinical and surgical interests;
• no requirement to finance or establish a new clinic;
• the possibility of becoming a minority partner in the future.
All pre-consultation examinations, refraction and required diagnostic imaging are performed by experienced orthoptists before the patient sees the ophthalmologist.
You can focus on interpretation, diagnosis, clinical decision-making, treatment planning and communication with the patient.
Indicative professional income
Collaborating ophthalmologists typically receive approximately €1,000–€3,500 in gross professional income per full clinical day, after the centre’s contractual share and before their own social contributions, professional expenses and income tax.
Actual income depends on patient volume, fees, case mix and procedures. The range is indicative and is not a guaranteed minimum.
Surgical opportunities
Operating capacity is available at the private Clinique Toulouse-Lautrec, immediately adjacent to the centre.
The successful candidate may establish or expand their own surgical activity, including cataract or retinal surgery. Operating sessions can be developed according to experience, interests and preferred activity level.
Candidate profile
We particularly welcome applications from UK-based ophthalmologists willing to relocate to France who:
• hold a medical degree and specialist ophthalmology qualification obtained in the EU, EEA or Switzerland and potentially recognisable in France — or another eligible qualification;
• have completed at least two years in an ophthalmology post within a public hospital;
• have a hospital title potentially permitting access to French Sector 2 status;
• are eligible to register with the Conseil de l’Ordre des Médecins.
Two years of public-hospital experience does not automatically guarantee Sector 2 eligibility. Final decisions regarding qualification recognition, registration and Sector 2 status are made by the French authorities.
French and relocation support
Our practical minimum is CEFR B2 French by the time clinical work begins. Candidates currently at approximately B1 who are committed to progressing may apply.
We can assist with:
• professional registration and the Sector 2 application;
• immigration or residency formalities where required;
• temporary accommodation and longer-term housing;
• tailored general and medical French lessons;
• practical relocation to France.
Why Albi?
Albi offers an excellent quality of life, beautiful countryside, short daily journeys and a more reasonable cost of living, while remaining within easy reach of Toulouse.
