Comprehensive benefits package

  • Officers hired as lateral transfers shall be credited for their years of previous full-time law enforcement service up to a maximum of three (3) years. Years of service credit shall be awarded in one (1) year increments.
  • Lateral transfer officers shall receive hourly wage and vacation awards based on years of credited service plus actual years of service with the Village.
  • Lateral transfer officers shall receive forty (40) hours of sick time accrual upon date of hire and continue to accrue sick time in accordance with the current collective bargaining agreement.
  • Officers hired under the Lateral Transfer classification shall be given seniority as prescribed in Section 7.01 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Years of service credit shall not be considered for purposes of seniority.
  • All lateral transfer candidates must successfully complete all steps and conditions of the Department's hiring process and field training program.
  • Successful lateral candidate's seniority rights, including shift and vacation and longevity pay, are determined by their length of service with the Village of Pleasant Prairie Police Department.

Officers interested in relocating to Wisconsin may be eligible for a $5,000 relocation grant through the Live Local Kenosha County Talent Attraction Program.

Position Details

The Police Officer performs a variety of law enforcement and social services work that enhances the safety, security, civil order, and stable atmosphere of the community.

Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Security and crime prevention patrols
  • Traffic control and traffic law enforcement
  • Investigation and first aid at accident scenes
  • Response to calls for service including rescues, crimes, and community service
  • Detection, investigation, apprehension, and arrest of people involved in crimes or misconduct

This position follows an eight-hour rotating schedule, consisting of five consecutive workdays followed by two days off, then five more workdays followed by three days off.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintains awareness of, takes action, and enforces Village of Pleasant Prairie ordinances, State of Wisconsin traffic and criminal laws, and federal laws through the appropriate action of apprehension, arrest, search, and seizure.
  • Provides public safety through multiple proactive approaches; observes traffic and enforces violations; collaborates with other government entities when appropriate.
  • Engages in positive, clear, and concise verbal communications with individuals when providing directions, collecting information, advising of rights and processes, or mediating disputes.
  • Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates traffic crashes, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action.
  • Patrols by various means (i.e. vehicle, foot, etc.) in order to detect and prevent crime.
  • Confers with shift supervisor on a regular basis, discussing work processes, incidents, problems and plans and receiving advice, counseling and instruction.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations by protecting crime scenes, identifying and preserving evidence, and interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Processes, packages, labels, and inventories evidence and property received or recovered.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness, maintenance, and operating condition of all property, apparatus, equipment, and tools.
  • Prepares a variety of reports which provide clear, accurate, and factual information; testifies in Federal, State, and Municipal courts.
  • Provides first-responder emergency medical services through the use and application of first aid, CPR and other trained medical skills.
  • Learns and utilizes technologies that will sustain and improve the level of service provided; participates in mandatory training.
  • Projects a positive professional image as stated in the Village of Pleasant Prairie Police Department Mission Statement.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with members of the community and other employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors which requires the knowledge, skills, and abilities of a police officer.

Physical Requirements

  • At any time, officers may be placed in situations that demand physical and mental endurance. Therefore, they must maintain a high degree of physical and mental fitness.
  • Requires frequent public interaction and the ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand (verbally or written). Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • Must be able to listen to and understand operating procedures and written directives.

Qualifications

The Village accepts lateral transfers that are currently employed full-time as a certified Law Enforcement Officer with a government recognized law enforcement agency.

"Qualified law enforcement agencies" refers to municipal, county and state police agencies. Corrections, reserve officer, security officer, and federal officer experience does not fulfill the requirement for certified police experience as a lateral applicant.

Qualified officers will be certified by the WI Law Enforcement Standards Board at the time of application or, in the case of an out of state applicant, have passed an equivalency exam as administered by the WI Law Enforcement Standards Board.

In Addition, You Must Meet The Following Qualifications

  • Completion of 60 college credits (associate's degree or higher) within first 5 years of law enforcement employment
  • Possess an acceptable amount of personal and professional history of good character as determined through a complete background investigation.
