Research & Instructional Team Manager [Onsite] No Visa Sponsorship is available for this position. This position is 100% on-site and located on the Cornell University Campus in Ithaca, New York. The Opportunity The TBE IT Research & Instructional (RIS) Manager leads a cross-campus team of system administrators who support instructional systems, research computing, and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning initiatives across Cornell Bowers, Cornell Duffield Engineering, and Cornell Tech. Working in close partnership with the Senior IT Director of TBE IT, this role owns the roadmap, capacity planning, and operations for research and teaching compute platforms—including the Unicorn cluster—while setting standards and priorities that align technical investments with faculty and instructional needs across three schools in two geographic locations. The RIS team is part of the Cornell Bowers, Duffield, and Tech IT Service Group (TBE IT), which provides comprehensive IT support—including end-user support, instructional technology, research computing, networking, applications and reporting, cybersecurity guidance, and AV services—to a community of nearly 10,000 faculty, staff, and students, in close collaboration with the broader Cornell IT community. Required Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree, 5 years to 7 years or equivalent combination of education and experience installing, configuring, and maintaining workstations and servers (Linux, Windows Environment) in a large, multi-vendor environment. Experience with High-Performance Computing clusters utilizing advanced Graphic Processor Units (GPU’s) and CPU computing. Artificial Intelligence infrastructure experience. Computer networks, network services, and distributed computing, particularly with TCP/IP, Ethernet. Demonstrated ability to independently organize, develop, and implement major projects atthe level of the college-wide integrated service environment. Highly developed planning and organizational skills are essential. The ability to work with and provide solutions for graduate level researchers in the college is essential. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 15+ years of experience managing or leading technical teams, preferably in a higher education, research, or HPC environment. Demonstrated experience with Linux system administration at scale, including cluster computing environments. Experience supporting HPC or GPU-based computing infrastructure, Familiarity with AI/ML workflows and the infrastructure needs of AI/ML and scientific computing research. Experience with capacity planning, lifecycle and fleet management of large cluster/desktop/VDI environments, automated tools and roadmap development for research computing platforms. Strong understanding of LDAP/AD, authentication systems, and account provisioning in complex, multi-platform environments. Experience setting and managing SLAs, technical standards, and IT governance policies. Excellent communication skills, with experience translating technical needs into faculty- and researcher-facing solutions. Experience with budgeting, vendor management, and technology procurement for research infrastructure. Familiarity with change management practices and ITIL or similar service management frameworks. Experience in higher education IT environments, particularly supporting engineering, scientific, or research computing needs.
