Senior Backend Engineer (Java)

Description Tango is a global live-streaming platform operating at real scale: 500M+ registered users . We build the backend systems behind live video, creator monetization, recommendations, moderation, payments, and AI-powered user experiences. This is not a typical CRUD backend role. You will work on distributed systems powering a real-time consumer product with demanding requirements for scale, latency, resilience, and cost efficiency. Parts of the platform operate at up to 50k RPS , and the engineering challenges span backend architecture, reliability, automation, and product impact. We invest heavily in AI across both product and engineering. We are building an engineering culture where engineers own quality , automation is increasingly AI-assisted , and manual bottlenecks are continuously reduced. Responsibilities Design, build, and evolve high-performance backend services for core product flows Own services end-to-end: architecture, implementation, testing, rollout, observability, and production reliability Solve distributed systems challenges related to scalability, latency, resilience, and cost efficiency Contribute to high-load systems, including components operating at up to 50k RPS Drive architectural decisions and improve reliability, performance, and operational simplicity Work closely with product, infrastructure, platform, and data teams to deliver measurable business impact Requirements Strong computer science fundamentals: algorithms, data structures, concurrency, and performance Strong production experience in backend engineering Experience building and operating distributed or microservice-based systems in production Strong understanding of scalable architectures and distributed systems trade-offs Experience designing robust APIs and service boundaries Solid experience with databases, asynchronous processing, and event-driven systems Strong ownership mindset across implementation, testing, rollout, monitoring, and production outcomes Comfortable in a fast-moving environment where engineers own quality and delivery Preferred: Experience with Java or readiness to ramp up quickly Experience with event-driven systems such as Kafka or similar technologies Experience with relational databases, caching layers, and cloud infrastructure Experience in high-scale consumer products, live-streaming, video, AI, moderation, fintech, or communication platforms Experience using AI tools in engineering workflows Current Tech Stack: Java 17–21, Spring Boot, GCP, Apache Kafka, MySQL, Redis, Aerospike What we offer: Each employee is a partner of the Company since everyone has stock options Competitive salary and performance review bonus Hybrid working model: one day per week remotely Official employment in Cyprus: work permit visa for employees and the residence permit for spouses Medical insurance (100% for employees and 75% for family members) Comfortable office in Limassol center with all goods to make your working day productive Lunch and dinner, unlimited coffee/tea/drinks and a variety of snacks in the office Opportunities for professional growth and skills improvement Atmosphere of challenges, creativity, team play Family Corporate events: we believe that our spouses support us every day and they are a part of our professional success Greek lessons Sport compensation Tango is the Title Sponsor of Aris Limassol F.C , so all our fans have the opportunity to attend their matches for free, participate in events with ARIS, to get branded gifts.
