Job Description Summary We are seeking a Senior Control Engineer to join our Research & Innovation team, driving the development of next-generation power conversion technologies for grid-scale energy systems. This role sits at the intersection of advanced R&D and practical application, delivering solutions from concept through prototype to product. You will innovate across power semiconductors, converter topologies, and control systems while collaborating with global engineering teams in a fast-paced, high-tech environment. Job Description Roles and Responsibilities In this role, you will: Architect, design, and develop embedded firmware for power converters control systems including control boards, control hardware integration, and control auxiliaries. Design and implement robust control solutions for power converters, closed-loop control systems, and embedded communications interfaces such as UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver-Transmitter), SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface), and I2C (Inter-Integrated Circuit). Write, compile, test, and debug firmware throughout the full product development lifecycle, from concept through validation and release. Develop, maintain, and use simulation models of power converters to validate system behavior before deployment of hardware. Apply strong systems knowledge in semiconductors devices, gate drivers, current, voltage and thermal transducers with an understanding of the interactions between electrical design and in complex power converter system design. Analyze and interpret electrical schematics, hardware interfaces, and control system behavior to support development and root cause investigations. Perform hands-on hardware debugging and validation in a high-voltage laboratory environment using equipment such as digital multimeters and oscilloscopes, while adhering to all safety protocols. Lead or support validation testing of control software and hardware, including issue debugging, failure reproduction, and investigation of field-reported events. Review product requirements and technical specifications to ensure they are complete, clear, and testable, and provide recommendations that improve product quality and engineering processes. Collaborate cross-functionally across the organization engineering teams to develop reliable, high-performing control systems and ensure successful system integration. Mentor junior engineers by providing technical guidance, sharing best practices, and supporting team capability growth. Communicate effectively across technical and non-technical stakeholders, with the ability to connect detailed engineering work to broader system and business objectives. Identify and apply AI-enabled tools and methods to improve engineering efficiency, quality, and ways of working. Document innovations through patents, technical reports, and peer-reviewed publications Stay current with emerging control engineering technologies and identify new applications for the business ​Location: Niskayuna, New York (on-site) We will be sponsoring a Visa for this role now or in the future. Required Qualifications Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering or related field with 6 years of industry experience in controls hardware development (OR bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering or related field with a minimum of 8 years of industry experience in control hardware manufacturing and testing) 5 years of experience with C/C++, PLCs, computer architecture, and embedded or industrial networking (MS Visual Studio TFS) 2-3 years of experience electrical design, schematics, PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) layout interpretation, and/or component specification 2-3 years of experience with power converter control design, power electronics, and electrical/thermal considerations (MS Visual Studio TFS) 3 years minimum experience with automation, test-driven development, and engineering test frameworks (GitHub, DLL, MATLAB, Python) Preferred Qualifications Proven track record in designing, building, and testing control system and control hardware for 1+MW scale power converters Familiarity with development of software and control hardware in the loop simulation platforms, power hardware in the loop testing, and control hardware commissioning Experience spanning R&D, product development, and manufacturing environments Knowledge of SQL, AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, and digital engineering workflows Understanding of industry standards and design codes applicable to control system hardware and communication protocol Demonstrated systems thinking, risk assessment, and technical tradeoff evaluation. Strong collaboration, stakeholder influence, project leadership, and communication skills Familiarity with electrical safety standards, PPE requirements, and safe work practices in high-voltage labs Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills with attention to detail Adaptable and collaborative in a fast-paced, globally distributed team environment About Us: Come bring your energy to change the world! Relocation Assistance Provided: Yes For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $113,200.00 and $188,800.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
