"Begin at the beginning," the King said, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop."
Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Still the best deployment advice ever written.
Curiouser and curiouser. Most engineering job ads lock you into a team before you've met anyone. This one doesn't. You apply once, and the company works with you to find the team where your skills will do the most damage, in the good sense.
Down the rabbit hole we go...
The company
Our client is a Series B, New York based company at the intersection of consumer finance and applied AI. They have built a platform that uses data and AI to fix a large, old and famously clunky corner of financial services, in a way that works better for the businesses using it and for the everyday people on the other end of it. If the old way of doing things was the Queen of Hearts, this is the company that stopped shouting and started thinking.
Tens of billions of dollars have moved through the platform, more than twenty million consumers have interacted with it, and well known consumer finance brands are customers who stay and expand. Around a hundred people, now growing from one product into a multi product platform and hiring senior engineers in both New York and San Francisco. We can share more once we speak.
The role
Senior Engineers here do more than write code. They're backend leaning but comfortable across the full stack, they own product outcomes, they set technical direction and they mentor the people around them, all while building systems that directly improve the financial lives of millions of people.
The stack is Python, React, Postgres and AWS. If you've come up through a different set of tools, that's fine. They care far more about how you think than which framework you learned first, and they'll teach the rest. A CS degree is expected. So is the ability to write clearly, because this is a writing first engineering culture where the memo usually comes before the meeting.
The tea party (the teams, that is)
Several teams are hiring, and part of the process is working out which chair is yours.
Borrower Acquisition is scaling the communication platforms that reach the right people with the right message at the right time. Borrower Activation builds the customer portal features that help people resolve accounts and get back on their feet. Compliance and Money Operations keeps the financial systems accurate, scalable and compliant while moving money at scale.
Two teams are also open to candidates at the next level up. Consumer Conversation is yours if you've worked with LLMs or built AI agents in any capacity. Client Experience wants data integration or genuinely client facing experience, someone who has sat across from a customer, not just their ticket.
What you will actually do
You will design and implement scalable systems that serve millions of borrowers and financial partners. You will contribute to architecture and roadmap planning and influence the direction of core projects. You will lead by example on engineering excellence, best practice and code quality, and you will mentor junior engineers so the whole team gets better, not just you.
You will work closely with Product, Design and Operations to ship things that matter, and you will help shape organisation wide engineering processes alongside the other senior leaders. In other words, you'll be one of the people deciding which way is up.
What we are looking for
Five or more years of professional software development experience. Strong technical expertise, ideally in Python, React, Postgres and AWS, though a strong engineer from another stack will be taken seriously. Real experience building and running production grade systems at scale, not prototypes that never met a user.
A Computer Science degree.
And strong written communication, because that's how decisions get made here.
If you've only ever painted the roses red on someone else's design, this won't be the one for you.
What will make you stand out
A product oriented mindset, meaning you care about what your work does for users and the business, not just whether the tests pass. Proven system design and architecture chops. Migrating large systems is a big plus, as is strong people leadership within your team and across functions. Experience with LLMs or AI agents opens the Consumer Conversation door. Client facing or data integration experience opens the Client Experience one.
The practical bits
New York City or San Francisco, hybrid, with three or more days a week in the office. Compensation is up to $245K USD base plus meaningful equity in a Series B company, and there are multiple openings across the teams above. Relocation is on the table for strong candidates outside those cities (a move within 60 days of starting), and visa transfers are supported, with new visas discussed case by case.
Why this one is worth a look
Most senior engineering roles hand you a backlog and a team you didn't choose. This one hands you a problem worth solving, a stack you'll enjoy, a seat where direction gets set, and a say in which team you land on. If you've ever wanted to see how deep the rabbit hole goes with AI in consumer finance, this is the company doing it for real.
We're all mad here, in the best possible way. Get in touch with Keiran Hathorn at Big Wave Digital for a confidential conversation.
