Senior/Lead Economic Editor - Program Direction Office, R&S - R025813 Primary Location : DC-Washington Employee Status : Regular Overtime Status : Exempt Job Type : Standard Work Shift : 1st Shift Relocation Provided : Yes Compensation Grade Low : FR PAY GRADE 26 Compensation Grade High : FR PAY GRADE 27 Minimum Salary : $128,600 Maximum Salary : $190,900 Posting Date : Aug 31, 2026 Position Description Minimum Education Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Minimum Experience 5 Summary The Senior Economic Editor organizes major projects, such as the Monetary Policy Report, and coordinates the editorial review of high-level policy materials, including reports to the Board and the FOMC and the speeches and congressional testimonies of Board members that are authored in the economics divisions. This editor is recognized as an expert in writing, editing, and publishing and routinely edits or rewrites text and designs and formats tables and figures in written materials and on the intranet and the Board's public websites maintained by the staff of the economics divisions. Duties and Responsibilities Using standard editorial techniques and extensive knowledge of economics, particularly in the areas relevant to the economics divisions, the Senior Economic Editor ensures that these materials are logically arranged, that the language and technical complexity are appropriate for the intended audience, and that the style conforms to division standards; this editor may also serve as a writing coach. Coordinates the layout and printing of high-level materials for external publication with the staff of Publishing and Communications Support in the Office of Board Members (BDM). Collaborates with authors in presenting verbal and graphic material in an unambiguous fashion by making organizational, stylistic, grammatical, and substantive changes and by rewriting or making specific recommendations concerning revisions. Devises approaches to the presentation of material, especially tables and charts, to best convey the information to the reader. Oversees all aspects of the production process from the inception of a project, coordinating, as appropriate, the work of the economics divisions with the editorial, graphics, and print shop personnel in BDM’s Publishing and Communications Support and the staff of the offices of Public Affairs, Public Information, and Congressional Liaison. May assign tasks on editorial projects to other section editors and review the results. Works with the section chief and confers with staff members throughout the Board in establishing and maintaining appropriate editorial policy and style. Consults with computing and information management professionals in the development of possible applications and the use of document publishing software for the internal publications of the economics divisions. Assists the chief in setting priorities, assigning tasks to other section members and supervising the execution and results, recruiting and onboarding new staff members, and other management functions. May manage the section in the chief's absence. Develops own professional skills. Maintains awareness of evolving technologies through professional publications and outside contacts. Identifies appropriate directions for own development and initiates activities to bring about that development. Position Requirements About the Role The Program Direction Office (PDO) in the Division of Research & Statistics has an opening for a full-time senior or lead economic editor. Senior and lead economic editors review and provide editorial guidance and coordination of the text, tables, and graphics in materials prepared by the staff of the Board’s economics divisions. Using standard editorial techniques and a general knowledge of economics, senior and lead economic editors ensure that these materials conform to established standards of grammar, language usage, style, and format. Senior and lead economic editors organize major projects such as the Monetary Policy Report; they also coordinate the editorial review of high-level policy materials, including reports to the Board and the FOMC, and speeches and congressional testimonies of Board members that are authored in the economics divisions. The editor is recognized as an expert in writing, editing, and publishing. Senior and lead economic editors exercise leadership to develop and mentor junior staff members and work closely with the section chief to manage editing assignments and to help push priorities forward. Because AI is increasingly being used in writing and editing, PDO editors will be expected to work with the Board’s AI experts to help develop and train these tools to gain expertise in using them; senior and lead editors will take a leadership role in these efforts. The AI work may include becoming proficient at writing prompts that guide the tool to deliver the desired output (context engineering), becoming adept at evaluating and using different editing tools, and sharing their knowledge about these tools and their relative benefits with colleagues across the research divisions. Job Qualifications Candidates for this position must meet the following qualifications: Minimum of five to six (5-6) years of experience in technical or academic writing or editing, including editing tables and figures A bachelor’s degree, preferably in English or the social sciences Strong editing and project management skills Serious attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work Ability to meet tight deadlines and adapt to shifting priorities Ability to work both independently and collaboratively Ability or willingness to develop proficiency using AI tools for editing and sharing this expertise with colleagues The ideal candidate may also have the following qualifications: Experience providing feedback to others, such as tutoring, teaching, or university writing center experience Experience in editing using tracked changes in Microsoft Word and managing documents in Microsoft SharePoint Experience with publication software such as Adobe InDesign Experience using a style guide Have solid project management skills, including organization and time management Experience working with non-native English speakers College-level coursework in economics; understanding of the role of the Federal Reserve Awareness of Section 508 requirements and accessibility best practices Basic facility with document design and web design Applicants for this position may be required to take an editing test. Note This position is based in Washington, D.C. and requires on-site presence. The expected salary range for this role is $128,600 - $190,900, which spans all posted grades. Final offers are based on the grade for which you minimally qualify and we select for offer, and are determined by experience & education, as well as internal and external factors.
