As a Sr. Principal Research Scientist – Level 4 located in Promontory, UT, you’ll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one. The Sr Principal Research Scientist is responsible for executing strong research and problem solving capability in an R&D and production support organization. This individual will provide technical expertise and consultation on a variety of material issues, including material selection, supply chain support, failure investigation, and production/facilities support. This person will be responsible for developing solid rocket propellants and conducting solid rocket propellant research. This position is focused on but not limited to polymer research for solid rocket propellants. This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Develop new solid rocket propellants that can meet ballistic, mechanical, and rheological property requirements Conduct novel solid rocket propellant research Presentation of data and recommendations to internal and external customers Production program support including failure investigations Write instructions/planning for production and testing of solid rocket propellant Review material and production specifications Coordinate and schedule work through multiple organizations Why you? Basic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or other related field with 8 years of professional experience – OR – Master’s degree with 6 years of professional experience – OR – PhD with 4 years of professional experience. Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance Experience with solid rocket propellant development Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory testing techniques and experience conducting experiments Strong background in polymer chemistry Knowledge of programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of low burn rate and high performance solid rocket propellants Knowledge of typical solid rocket propellant raw materials Experience with energetic material testing Experience safely handling solid rocket propellants Experience with physics-based and empirical modeling General understanding of solid rocket propellant combustion principles Knowledge of DoT energetic shipping regulations Advanced degree preferred Curious about all the exciting developments with the Northrop Grumman Space Sector? Northrop Grumman Total Rewards Primary Level Salary Range: $122,800.00 - $184,200.00 The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
