We are currently seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist 1, Stormwater to work in a technical support role with highly skilled professionals on diverse project teams in a dynamic environment. This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing group and company and get involved in a variety of projects for a diverse range of clients. This position offers a recent graduate the opportunity to support stormwater quality management and environmental compliance projects. During the stormwater season, generally October through April, the selected candidate will work primarily in the field at project sites in Ventura/Los Angeles Counties. Responsibilities will include stormwater sampling, compliance inspections, coordination with contractors and laboratories, implementation of standard operating procedures, data management, and technical reporting. Rain-event response will require early-morning starts and on-call availability, including some weekends and potentially holidays. Outside the stormwater season, the position will generally be divided between other field assignments and office-based data analysis and reporting. Due to site-specific permit requirements, the selected candidate must be able to report to the designated primary project site within one hour when required. Relocation assistance is available, if needed. This is a full-time position in the Los Angeles/Ventura County Area assigned virtually to our Costa Mesa, CA office. DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES In this position, you will: Conduct field investigations and assessments of soil, groundwater, surface water, etc. using approved industry standard procedures. Conduct basic construction observation, including quality control documentation and field testing tasks. Conduct or oversee remedial system O&M and field pilot study demonstrations. Prepare and maintain accurate and detailed documentation of activities both in the field and during data evaluation. Apply academic training and use computer software to perform calculations and evaluation of information. Support project environmental data reduction and summarization. Support project feasibility study, remedial design, cost estimating, and permitting tasks. Assist with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and GIS tasks. Draft technical sections of project communications and reports. Assist with the development of technical scopes of work and cost estimating for proposal efforts on small- to medium-sized project opportunities. Perform all work in accordance with company and client health and safety protocols. Demonstrate the company’s foundational safety behaviors. Support site-specific environmental compliance activities related to stormwater quality management, construction and post-construction best management practices, NPDES permitting, and California stormwater requirements. Conduct stormwater sampling, site inspections, and field monitoring activities in accordance with applicable permits, project plans, and standard operating procedures. Coordinate field activities with project team members, contractors, laboratories, and other project stakeholders. Assist with permit reviews and the evaluation of applicable local, regional, state, and federal stormwater requirements. Support stormwater data validation, analysis, visualization, and preparation of compliance reports and other technical deliverables. Support field programs involving stormwater quality management, contaminated-site investigation and management, and environmental protection-related construction, maintenance, and monitoring. SKILLS/EXPERIENCE Minimum Skills and Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Water Resources Engineering, Geology, Civil Engineering, or related field. 0 to 2 years of related field experience. Proficient technical writing, verbal communication, reasoning, and time management skills. Able to work independently or with minimal direction in performing tasks and assignments under the direction of senior staff. Desire to learn and grow in your profession, demonstrate a positive attitude, strong work ethic, resourcefulness, flexibility, and ownership. Familiar with environmental analytical testing and data reduction techniques for soil, water, and air. Able to meet the physical requirements of the position: lift 50 lbs., traverse unstable/sloping sites and landscapes, work outside in a range of weather conditions, and have the stamina for moderate physical activity for the majority of field working hours. Able to travel to work locations that may require overnight stays. Able to work primarily in the field during the stormwater season, generally October through April, including early-morning starts and on-call response during rain events, weekends, and holidays when required. Able to report to the designated primary project site in Los Angeles/Ventura County area within one hour due to site-specific stormwater permit requirements. Able to pass client-specific background screenings and obtain required site access badges. Able to handle large sample volumes and safely operate or ride in field vehicles, including four-wheel-drive vehicles when necessary. Must have reliable transportation or be able to rent a vehicle for site access; primary project sites are not accessible by public transportation. Preferred Skills: Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Water Resources Engineering or related field. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and GIS. OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER training. Interest in obtaining one or more construction stormwater certifications, such as CISEC, CPESC, CPSWQ, or CESSWI. Experience or academic exposure related to Industrial NPDES, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System, or MS4 programs. Experience with soil, groundwater, air, or stormwater sampling and reporting methods. Familiarity with California stormwater regulations, construction and post-construction best management practices, and environmental compliance inspections. The salary range for this position in Costa Mesa, CA is $75,000 - $85,000 annually . Actual compensation will be based upon a variety of factors such as education, related work experience, certificates, skills, and current market conditions.
