About Us:

Tokyo Academics is the passion project of a constellation of teachers, researchers, and academics from around the world. Since 2012, we’ve evolved from a few university friends to a growing number of part-time and full-time individuals located in Tokyo, as well as working remotely. We are an organization of experts deeply passionate about helping students meet their potential and capture the opportunities of the future.

Job Summary:

At Tokyo Academics, academic leadership is about ensuring the quality and effectiveness of instruction from a tutor’s first day through their long-term growth. The ideal candidate is a mid-career educator who develops and inspires the people around them, holds a high bar for student outcomes and tutor satisfaction, and wants to build a long-term career and life in Japan. In this role, you will directly manage four Instructional Leads and two remote virtual assistants, and through them lead a wider community of hourly-contracted tutors. The Teaching & Learning Manager should be comfortable leading a team, working from data, and adapting under changing needs to keep instruction strong across every service line.

Typically, this person will be working at the Tokyo Academics office in Nishi-Azabu, during our regular business hours (Sunday to Thursday, 10 AM – 7 PM Japan Standard Time). The Teaching & Learning Manager may need to make off-site visits to schools, partners, and TA locations.

Objectives of this role:

  • Partner closely with the Academic Director to shape and realize Tokyo Academics' long-term vision for teaching and learning
  • Own the complete tutor journey, from onboarding through long-term professional development, and be accountable for the quality and effectiveness of all instruction
  • Drive student outcomes, instructional quality, and tutor satisfaction as the division’s core measures of success
  • Develop and elevate your team of Instructional Leads and support staff so that every tutor is well-equipped, supported, and growing
  • Partner with the Revenue Growth Manager to ensure instructional capacity, curriculum, and classroom tools can meet forecasted enrollment
  • Act as an academic expert for the entire division, giving every other team clear insight into student performance and instructional quality

What you will work on:

  • Serve as a lead academic contact for tutors, addressing curriculum needs, answering curriculum questions, and managing student behavior issues
  • Conduct teaching-focused check-ins to ensure instructional quality and strong student outcomes
  • Own and continuously improve tutor training, onboarding, and professional development pathways
  • Implement and act on feedback systems such as QA reviews and NPS, closing the loop with tutors and teams
  • Ensure tutors have the high-quality curriculum and classroom tools they need to deliver a world-class experience
  • Act as an internal authority on subject and service questions, tutor teaching issues, and client inquiries regarding teaching methodology
  • Share responsibility with the Revenue Growth Manager for supporting tutors with parent emails, time-off submissions, TAS issues, policy questions, and professional-growth discussions
  • Share responsibility for addressing tutor training questions, HR issues, and general inquiries about taxes or life in Japan
  • Produce and communicate clear reporting on student outcomes and instructional quality for leadership and cross-functional teams

Our ideal candidate has:

  • A Bachelor’s degree (a Master’s in education or a related field is an advantage)
  • Fluent English proficiency
  • Japanese proficiency (would be an advantage)
  • At least 5 years of experience in education, 2 years in a management or team/teacher-leadership capacity
  • Direct classroom teaching or tutoring experience, and credibility with teachers as a practitioner
  • Proven success developing educators through training, coaching, and structured professional development
  • Experience overseeing curriculum quality and instructional standards across subjects or programs
  • Familiarity with feedback and quality systems such as QA reviews and NPS
  • Data- and outcomes-driven decision-making skills
  • Strong people-management, communication, and stakeholder-management skills
  • A genuine desire to build a long-term career and life in Japan
  • Understanding of the international school landscape and the journey into top US universities

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation package including a performance-based bonus biannually
  • Compensation is commensurate with experience
  • 20 days of paid time off per year
  • Visa sponsorship and relocation support (if needed)
  • Strong potential for career progression and diversification

Work hours:

  • 40 hours / week, flexible schedule
  • Working in-person ~ Sunday to Thursday, 10 AM to 7 PM JST (flex time and remote days available)

Primary Location:

  • Hirose building 3F., 3-24-17 Nishiazabu, Minato, Tokyo 106-0031
