Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems. The Materials Science Department within the Space Materials Laboratory is seeking a well-qualified individual for the role of Technical Specialist – Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE). In this hands-on laboratory role, you will execute Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI) techniques on mission-critical launch vehicle and spacecraft components under the guidance of senior technical staff. You will support mission assurance through hands-on inspections, specimen preparation, data collection, and maintenance of laboratory NDI equipment and systems. This role offers the opportunity to develop technical expertise in state-of-the-art NDI methods while supporting programs for USSF, NRO, and commercial space agencies. Highlights of our lab's capabilities can be seen here: Virtual Tour This position may be filled at the Technical Specialist II or Technical Specialist III depending on the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility in El Segundo, CA. What You’ll Be Doing Collaborate with research associates and senior technical staff to support field evaluations, failure investigations, and technical assessments Operate and maintain NDI instrumentation including ultrasonic systems, eddy current equipment, acoustic microscopes, thermography systems, and associated test and measurement electronics Prepare specimens and samples for NDI testing, ensuring proper handling, labeling, and documentation throughout the inspection process Collect and document inspection data using laboratory data acquisition systems and software, maintaining accurate records in accordance with quality standards Support laboratory operations including equipment setup, calibration coordination, inventory management, and laboratory organization Develop proficiency in multiple NDI techniques through hands-on training and on-the-job experience What Corporate Skills You’ll Bring Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical procedures and documentation requirements Must work well in a team environment and take direction from senior technical staff Possess strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities Demonstrate flexibility and ability to adapt to changing project needs and priorities Ability to communicate effectively regarding technical activities, safety concerns, and equipment status Self-motivated with ability to initiate routine activities and work within established timelines What You Need to be Successful Minimum Requirements for Technical Specialist II: High School Diploma or equivalent minimum of (4) years in a vocational trade school or apprenticeship program Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, quality inspection, or technical trade environment Experience utilizing laboratory instruments and test equipment Understanding of experiment setup, documentation, and laboratory safety protocols Working knowledge of instrument operation, data collection techniques, and data management Basic skills and knowledge in physics, chemistry, math, and/or electronics Ability to follow detailed technical procedures and maintain accurate records Willingness to travel occasionally and work outside normal business hours to support program needs (approximately 10-20% travel or as required) This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance In addition to the above, the minimum requirements for Technical Specialist III include: Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, quality inspection, or technical trade environment Advanced knowledge of instrument control, data collection techniques, and data management Demonstrated ability to perform some non-routine tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment Experience coordinating with support organizations (e.g., EHS, metrology, facilities) in a laboratory or manufacturing environment How You Can Stand Out It would be impressive if you have one or more of these: Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Applied Science, or related technical field NDT/NDI Level I certification in one or more methods (UT, ET, PT, MT, RT, IRT) through ASNT, employer-based programs, or equivalent certification bodies Experience with non-destructive testing or quality inspection in aerospace, defense, or manufacturing environments Experience with aerospace materials including composites, metals, and adhesive bonds Familiarity with data acquisition systems, instrumentation control software, or automated testing platforms Experience with fixture fabrication and modification, 3D printing, and supporting automation systems for NDI applications Basic programming or scripting skills (Python, LabVIEW, or similar) Experience working in a research laboratory environment Experience with quality management systems, calibration programs, or laboratory compliance requirements Experience with the Intelligence Community A current and active Secret or higher security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government Physical Requirements/Work Environments: Ability to work at altitudes greater than 10,000 feet Ability to use a computer to complete assignments Ability to communicate with individuals and groups in person, by phone and telepresence While performing the duties of this job, the employee will typically work in a lab environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee may visit locations with varying temperatures and floor surfaces, and may be exposed to seasonal elements Laboratory environment with possible exposure to hazardous materials Certain laboratories may operate at a high noise level We offer a competitive compensation package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to our business. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
