Is this job info correct?
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The Role

Are you interested in a career in healthcare science that offers a high degree of autonomy, responsibility and the opportunity to make a real difference to patient care? NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, in partnership with NHS Education Scotland, has an exciting opportunity to train as a registered Clinical Scientist in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology.

Working within a supportive multidisciplinary team, you will gain experience delivering specialist respiratory and sleep physiology services to adults referred from a wide range of clinical specialties. Throughout your training, you will develop the knowledge, skills and competencies required to register as a Clinical Scientist while contributing to high-quality, patient-centred care.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

  • This is a 3-year fixed-term funded training post; you will be working 36 hours per week over Monday to Friday - day shift with rotational nightshift and back shift
  • Your primary base will be Gartnavel General Hospital; however you will be expected to work across other NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde sites as part of your training programme. You will gain experience in respiratory physiology laboratories, cardiopulmonary exercise testing services and a dedicated sleep laboratory with inpatient sleep facilities.

Key Responsibilities

You will undertake comprehensive workplace-based training in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology while completing the academic requirements of the National School of Healthcare Science training programme.

You will perform and interpret a range of specialist diagnostic investigations, including pulmonary function and cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and support the delivery of sleep physiology services. Working closely with experienced clinical scientists and multidisciplinary teams, you will rotate through a variety of departments to develop a broad range of clinical competencies.

Throughout the programme, you will be expected to provide compassionate, patient-centred care, demonstrate excellent communication and teamwork skills, and maintain a commitment to continuous professional development.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Relevant BSc (Honours) science-based degree (essential).
  • Ability to undertake a structured 3-year Clinical Scientist training programme.
  • Willingness to complete both workplace-based learning and academic study, including distance learning and block release.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel and work across NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde sites as required for rotational training.

What We Offer

We offer a wide range of supportive policies designed to enhance your employee journey, including a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme, Cycle to Work Scheme, bursary scheme and extensive learning and development opportunities.

As an NHS Scotland employee, you will be entitled to:

  • A minimum of 27 days annual leave, increasing with length of service, plus public holidays

  • Salary Sacrifice Car Benefit Scheme
  • Development opportunities including study bursaries, e-learning and classroom-based courses

AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can be great for planning and preparing your application, but your answers must be your own.

  • Show us the real you: Your application should reflect your skills, experience, and motivations authentically.

Tip: Think of AI as a helper, not a substitute. We want to understand you, not an AI tool.
