Transaction Processing Officer - based in Luxembourg.

This position is based at our Luxembourg headquarters and requires regular office presence. The EIB offers you the opportunity to live and work in a truly international and multi-cultural environment. We also offer relocation support.

The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Finance Directorate (FI), Planning and Settlement of Operations Department (PRO), Transaction Processing Lending Division (TPL), Special Operations Processing Unit (SPE) at its headquarters in Luxembourg, a Transaction Processing Officer*.

This is a full-time position at grade 5 for which the EIB offers a permanent contract.

Purpose

You will contribute to the timely and accurate processing of financial transactions, ensuring the Bank meets its commitments while effectively managing operational and settlement risks in a high-volume, high-criticality environment.

In parallel, you will support the transformation of the back office by leveraging data, automation, AI and emerging technologies such as Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), contributing to more efficient, resilient and future-proof financial operations processes. In doing so, you will bring a data-driven and technology-oriented perspective to traditional operational activities.

The role combines solid financial markets transactional expertise with a growing focus on data analysis, innovation and technology adoption. It is designed as a profile combining financial operations with data and analytical capabilities, contributing to the evolution of the back office towards a more automated, intelligent and scalable operating model.

Operating Network

The Division is composed of two teams (Standard and Special lending operations Units). This position is part of the Special Lending operations team, operating as a pool of competencies combining operational expertise with emerging data and technology capabilities.

You will report to the Head of Unit. As such, you will autonomously execute key processes of various complexities, ensuring the overall quality of the unit’s output and compliance with the Bank’s policies and processes. This involves high volumes, tight deadlines and significant operational risk exposure in a financial operations processing environment.

The current context involves an accelerating transformation of back-office activities through the adoption of automation, AI/ML, RPA and DLT-based settlement models, requiring closer integration between operations, data and technology. There is also an increasing focus on data quality, process standardisation and straight-through processing to enhance efficiency and resilience.

This role involves close interaction with Front Office, Risk, Legal, IT and Data functions, as well as involvement in cross-functional innovation and transformation initiatives.

Accountabilities

Transaction Processing & Controls (Core Back Office)

  • Execute end-to-end processing of lending portfolio transactions.
  • Ensure timely confirmations, settlements and lifecycle event management.
  • Perform controls to reduce operational, financial and reputational risk.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of control frameworks, particularly in increasingly automated environments.

Data Analysis & Process Improvement

  • Analyse operational data (breaks, volumes, settlement performance) to identify inefficiencies and improvement opportunities.
  • Apply analytical techniques (trend analysis, pattern recognition, basic statistical methods) to support decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports and KPIs to monitor performance and operational risk.
  • Increase straight-through processing (STP) and reduce manual intervention through data-driven insights.

Automation, AI & RPA

  • Contribute to the identification, design and implementation of automation initiatives (e.g. reconciliation, matching, workflow optimisation).
  • Explore and prototype data-driven and AI solutions (e.g. anomaly detection, document processing, decision support tools).
  • Validate and challenge outputs of automated and AI solutions from a business, risk and control perspective.

Emerging Technologies & DLT

  • Contribute to the analysis and implementation of DLT-based settlement and post-trade solutions.
  • Assess operational impacts of DLT and evolving market infrastructures.
  • Act as a point of contact between operations and innovation initiatives in this space.

Business Analysis & Requirements

  • Translate operational and regulatory needs into clear, structured business requirements.
  • Contribute to process mapping, documentation and optimisation initiatives.
  • Support implementation of new tools, digital workflows and system upgrades.

Risk Management & Problem Solving

  • Strengthen control frameworks, particularly in automated, AI-driven or DLT-based processes.
  • Contribute to enhancing operational resilience and risk monitoring capabilities.

Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing

  • Work closely with Front Office, Risk, Legal, IT, Data and Innovation teams on operational and transformation topics.
  • Contribute to cross-functional transformation and innovation initiatives across the Bank.

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) preferably in Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, Data Science or equivalent.
  • Additional relevant postgraduate studies or professional qualifications would be considered as an advantage.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, ideally in Middle or Back Office of Financial Institution, or equivalent.
  • Good understanding of financial products and loan documentation.
  • Strong analytical mindset and ability to work with operational and/or financial datasets.
  • Exposure to automation tools, workflow engines or process optimization techniques.
  • Exposure to AI or data science use cases (e.g. anomaly detection, classification, document processing, basic predictive analytics), through academic or professional experience.
  • Hands-on experience (academic or professional) with data analysis or programming tools such as Python, SQL or equivalent, and data visualization tools (e.g. Power BI or similar) will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of/in project management would be considered an advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and/or French (***) with a good command of the other. Knowledge of other EU languages would be an advantage.

(***) Unless stated explicitly as a required qualification, a good command of French is not a pre-requisite for hire. As both English and French are however official working languages of the EIB, proficiency in both languages is a pre-requisite for your future career development. Any language clause in your contract must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible for a promotion (either via the annual appraisal cycle or via an internal selection process). Proficiency is understood to mean the attainment of level 5 of the Inter Institutional language courses, corresponding to B1.2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
