About the Role We are seeking a suitably qualified General Surgeon to join the Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) speciality within the General Surgery & Trauma Service at Te Toka Tumai – Auckland. This is a full-time, fixed-term fellowship for 12 months, commencing in January 2027. Te Toka Tumai – Auckland is New Zealand’s largest hospital, with approximately 1,300 beds, providing comprehensive secondary and tertiary UGI surgical services, with referrals received from across New Zealand. The UGI Service manages a broad range of complex Upper Gastrointestinal conditions and works closely with the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) and Intra-Abdominal Transplant teams, as well as Oncology, Radiology (including Interventional Radiology), Trauma and Acute Surgical Services, Intensive Care, Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Gastroenterology & Endoscopy. The UGI team consists of four Senior Medical Officers, one Fellow, one SET/Junior Registrar, one House Officer, and one Clinical Nurse Specialist, providing a supportive and collaborative environment focused on high-quality patient care, education and professional development. The Fellow will gain extensive exposure to complex Upper Gastrointestinal surgery, including elective and acute surgical care, with opportunities for operative experience, multidisciplinary decision-making, teaching, simulation and research. Clinical activities include regular operating lists, outpatient clinics, participation in the General Surgery & Trauma on-call roster, weekly multidisciplinary meetings, and involvement in UGI education and quality improvement activities. The fellowship provides exposure to a wide range of UGI procedures, including oesophagectomy, gastrectomy, bariatric surgery, hiatal hernia repair, fundoplication, and complex referral cases, with opportunities to develop advanced surgical skills within a tertiary referral environment. Clinical research opportunities are available through the Department of Surgery and in collaboration with the University of Auckland. This fellowship is designed to provide a structured and progressive training programme tailored to the Fellow’s existing surgical skills and experience. The role is primarily based at Auckland City Hospital; however, flexibility is required, as the position supports services across both hospital sites and may include clinical duties at Greenlane Clinical Centre to meet departmental service requirements.
