3D Designer
Part-time - Hybrid - Budapest
ABOUT GALACTIC FLEET
We are Galactic Fleet, a Hungarian game development company based in Budapest. We work in co-development with US game studios on multiple projects, building video games for various platforms. We are also building our Indie Studio, BlueRoof Games, and our first title, Looking Up, is now available on Steam.
Why join us?
In an industry based on fun, your job should be fun! For us, fun is: solving hard problems, coloring outside the lines, building the impossible, and working collaboratively. Fun is seeing someone play your game on a bus or plane. We value every idea, contribution, and perspective, and will work tirelessly to put those ideas into something tangible in the hands of our players.
THE ROLE
As a 3D Designer with a focus on modeling, you'll shape the 3D visual world of our games through characters, environments, and props that players move through and remember. You'll own models from blockout to in-engine assets: low to medium polygon counts, efficient texture maps, correct scale and pivots, and meshes. You must be able to model and texture confidently in Blender, Maya or 3ds Max. This is a hands-on, collaborative role in a small team, and your work will be visible in everything players see and feel.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Model stylized characters, creatures, environments, and props from concept art, references, or written direction
- Create blockouts and greyboxes early, so designers can test scale, spacing, and readability before assets are final
- Handle UV unwrapping and layout, baking (normal, AO, curvature), and texturing in a stylized or hand-painted style
- Build topology and edge flow that deform well, and hand off rig-ready meshes to our 3D animator
- Set up materials, LODs, and poly budgets that hold up on our target platforms
- Contribute to the art style and 3D style guide, and keep new assets consistent with it
- Iterate on models based on playtesting feedback, animation needs, and technical constraints
- Work with designers on gameplay clarity and player guidance, and with engineers on technical requirements
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
Required
- A portfolio showing strong stylized 3D modeling (we want to see characters, not only props and environments)
- Confident command of the full modeling craft: hard-surface and organic modeling, sculpting, retopology, UVs, baking, and texturing
- Ability to model and texture in Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max, and willingness to work in whichever one the project pipeline calls for
- Proficiency with a sculpting tool (ZBrush or equivalent) and a texturing tool (Substance 3D Painter or equivalent)
- Understanding of the full 3D pipeline for games
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid setting
- Time management and the ability to meet deadlines
- Clear written and verbal communication skills in English
- Personal passion for gaming
Nice to Have
- Traditional drawing skills (a strong plus in your portfolio)
- Knowledge of technical art or implementation workflows
- Experience with game engines such as Unity or Godot
- Previous experience working on game titles
YOUR IMPACT
You'll own the visual quality and clarity of the game experience, ensuring art supports both player understanding and emotional engagement. You'll also own your own professional growth: researching, playing, and studying to sharpen your craft, then sharing what you learn with the team.
WHAT WE OFFER
- Part-time position (20h/week)
- Hybrid work: mix of in-office (Budapest) and remote
- Office in a well-connected, frequented area of Budapest
- Deep, hands-on exposure to professional game development pipelines
- Learning opportunities through mentorship and courses
- A small team where your contributions are seen, valued, and shipped
- An international work environment
