Stanford Law School's budget salary range: The budgeted salary range for this position is $105,114-$115,029. This is a hybrid position with onsite work each week The Academic Success Counselor will help promote the academic success of Stanford Law students in all cycles of their student experience, from Orientation, throughout law school, and as they prepare to enter the legal profession. Reporting to the Director of Academic Success, this position will be situated in the Office of Student Affairs (OSA). The Academic Success Counselor will help support academic and bar-related programming at Stanford Law. The Academic Success Counselor will also meet one-on-one with JD, joint degree, and advanced degree law students to provide academic and Bar Exam and Bar admission advice, to help students plan for curricular requirements for graduation, and to help students improve their issue spotting and legal writing skills. This position presents an opportunity to work with the Director of Academic Success, OSA, the Registrar’s Office, and the Stanford Law School Faculty and Staff to build upon the early stages of our academic skills program to further support our diverse student population to ensure that all students succeed at Stanford Law. The successful candidate will have strong legal writing and analytical skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills. CORE DUTIES: Provide one-on-one academic support and counsel to students, working with them to review their study habits and performance on exams and practice problems in order to support their growth as lawyers; Provide one-on-one academic advising to students as they make course selections, including Advanced Degree students who must take courses that satisfy specific bar requirements, and joint degree students who have to navigate multiple programs’ requirements; Support the Director of Academic Success in academic and bar-related programming at SLS, including revising presentations and support for presentations and academic / bar events; Administer the Academic Success Program; Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies and mediate complex and sensitive issues. May be tasked with evaluating and recommending program improvements; Resolve multi-dimensional matters in response to students, bar exams and bar admission concerns; May have to escalate issues to Director of Academic Success; Collaborate with the Director of Academic Success in creating a comprehensive, student-friendly system for communicating key bar exam and admission deadlines and guidance; analyze effectiveness and make recommendations for supportive programming; Develop and implement plans for student outreach efforts; Represent the Academic Success Program at meetings and events; Collaborate with the Director of Academic Success, OSA team, Director of Legal Research & Writing, first-year Faculty, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; and Serve as subject matter expert to students and other departments. Other duties may also be assigned PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, and EXPERIENCE: A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and a record of academic and extracurricular success in law school; Prior admission to a state bar; and A minimum of two years’ experience in law practice and/or law teaching with a focus on legal writing and analysis. Or a combination of education and relevant experience. Strong preference will be given to candidates with the following qualifications and experience: Familiarity with the subjects tested on and the format of the California, NextGen, and Uniform Bar Exams; Degree or experience in Education or Counseling; Experience in academic support/skills programs at the law-school level; The ability to juggle multiple competing priorities and meet firm deadlines; The ability to handle confidential information and exhibit good judgment in working with students, faculty, and staff; A strong understanding of the conceptual frameworks of growth mindset, stereotype threat, and belonging; and The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and administrators. Core Duties : Administer an area or program in student services, evaluate and recommend decisions on program eligibility. Review decisions recommended by other staff. Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues. May be tasked with evaluating and recommending program improvements. Resolve multi-dimensional matters in response to students in crisis, at risk, or who have other program issues, counsel students and parents on sensitive and confidential issues. Provide guidance and counsel, oversee and develop a wide range of programs and services, analyze effectiveness and make recommendations for future programs. Reconcile complex issues; analyze diverse transactions from multiple sources. Summarize data from multiple sources, prepare manage reports and presentations. Identify and evaluate data needs, manage the implementation and development of technology. Develop and implement plans for outreach efforts, develop and maintain external community and university liaison, represent department and university at meetings and events. Provide advice to students on a range of issues, including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc., in order to guide them in making appropriate choices and decisions. May have to escalate issues to a senior advisor. Apprise students of research, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, make recommendations and may award grants. Serve as a subject matter expert to students and other departments; represent unit/department. May lead, create and contribute to development of business practices and organizational change to improve processes and workflow. May oversee, analyze and assist in financial processes and development of budgets. Serve as a key member of a project team. May train and supervise other staff, volunteers, student and temporary workers. Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management. Advanced analysis and problem solving skills. Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite. Advanced customer service skills. Relevant computer systems/technology experience. Understanding of financial transactions. Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
