The Role


We are looking for an Academy Performance Psychologist on a 12 month fixed-term contract basis, to be responsible for the coordination and delivery of our performance psychology provision across all age groups (U9-U21). The psychology service will reflect and support the strategic direction of our Academy by optimising players’ champion mentality.

In this exciting role, you will help develop the requisite psychological capacities to achieve high performance, and you'll be imbedded within an interdisciplinary team and expected to collaboratively work with multiple colleagues to optimise our players’ potential.

Your day-to-day


  • Provide comprehensive psychology support - you'll directly contribute to the development of Strong Young Gunners by offering education to players, parents/guardians and staff, as well as individual and group-based psychology support for our Academy and loan players, and you will design player profiles and individual development plans

  • Oversee diligent psychological monitoring - you will provide thorough psychological assessment for injured players and those nearing a return to playing

  • Support player wellbeing - you'll take pride in developing an environment and culture that embraces both challenge and care, regularly overseeing mental health and wellbeing screenings for players, and communicating and contributing towards our Wellbeing in Performance group

  • Collaborate with our Coaches - you will work directly with Coaches to design training practices that develop players' champion mentality

  • Align closely with our Medical department - you'll partner with our Medical team to identify, support and refer (where appropriate) player and staff mental health concerns

  • Maintain a forward-thinking approach - you will actively contribute to the design, execution and sharing of research and development

  • Uphold our high standards - you'll strive to maintain our child protection, health and safety and equal opportunities policies and procedures

  • Act as an ambassador for our club - you will look to embody our Academy and wider club values and you'll adhere to a strict code of confidentiality in respect of any information relating to our club and its operation

What we are looking for


  • Background in high-level sport - you're proud of your history of providing psychology-related services in elite sport, and your experience working with young players in a football academy setting

  • Credible expertise - you are currently registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Sport and Exercise Psychologist, and you have postgraduate training completed through the British Psychological Society (BPS) or Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES)

  • Certification in Safeguarding and First aid- you hold up to date certificates in FA Safeguarding Children and Emergency First Aid

  • Track record of operating within a multidisciplinary team - you've successfully worked within a diverse performance support team

  • Effective communication skills - you possess excellent interpersonal skills, especially with Coaches, and you're able to articulate complex information in a simple and relevant way

  • Best-in-class team player - you're able to integrate and collaborate in a team environment and you can build professional relationships to influence and motivate change

  • Flexible and adaptable mindset - you can demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to respond to the demands of elite football, and you're proactive and versatile in your approach to achieving successful outcomes

  • Professional attitude - you are easily able to role model humility discipline and respect, to act in line with our Academy standards and club values



Position of Trust - As someone in a position of trust role involving regular, direct contact with children or vulnerable adults you will be expected to uphold high standards of conduct to prevent abuse, including sexual, physical, or emotional harm. This role requires you to keep updated with both club and FA Safeguarding training and education
