Position Summary

Cansel is seeking a highly motivated Staff Accountant to join our growing accounting team in a remote position. The successful candidate may be located anywhere in Canada. This position is ideal for an early-career accounting professional with strong analytical skills, advanced Excel capabilities, exceptional attention to detail, and a desire to learn and grow within a dynamic business environment.

Our accounting team supports multiple operating companies. Approximately half of this role is focused on recurring month-end accounting activities, while the balance involves investigating issues, analyzing financial data, improving processes, and supporting business operations.

The successful candidate will be a naturally curious, self-motivated problem solver who enjoys working with data, identifying discrepancies, and developing practical solutions. We are looking for someone who takes ownership of their work, seeks continuous improvement, and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Month-End Accounting

• Maintain general ledger accounts through detailed reconciliations and analysis.

• Reconcile balance sheet accounts to supporting schedules and subledgers.

• Prepare journal entries, accruals, and other recurring accounting transactions.

• Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.

• Support Canada sales and use tax reporting by preparing supporting data and schedules.

• Complete assigned month-end tasks accurately and within established deadlines.

Financial Analysis and Reporting

• Prepare recurring financial reports, schedules, and key performance indicators.

• Analyze financial results and investigate unusual transactions, balances, or trends.

• Prepare transaction details and supporting documentation for management inquiries.

• Assist with materials for financial review meetings and business performance discussions.

Continuous Improvement

• Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve efficiency.

• Participate in special projects, financial investigations, and ad hoc analysis.

• Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and proactively suggest solutions.

Qualifications

• Diploma, degree, or ongoing studies in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field.

• Limited professional experience is acceptable; relevant co-op, internship, or practical accounting experience is an asset.

• Fundamental understanding of accounting principles (ASPE/IFRS) and financial processes.

• Experience with an ERP system such as SAP is an asset.

• Experience using French in a business environment is an asset.

Required Skills and Attributes

Technical Skills

• Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP or VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, data validation, and data analysis techniques.

• Ability to work with large volumes of financial data while maintaining accuracy.
