JOB DESCRIPTION The Accountant is a mid-level accounting professional responsible for owning key areas of VLCM's accounting cycle and helping ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial information. This position performs general ledger accounting, prepares journal entries and reconciliations, supports month-end and year-end close, analyzes account activity, and works across departments to resolve accounting issues. The ideal candidate has more than five years of professional accounting experience, strong technical accounting fundamentals, and the ability to independently manage assigned accounting responsibilities while identifying opportunities to improve processes and controls. WHAT YOU'LL GET TO DO Own assigned areas of the general ledger and ensure transactions are recorded accurately, completely, and in the appropriate accounting period. Prepare and post recurring and non-recurring journal entries, including accruals, reclassifications, and other month-end adjustments. Perform detailed balance sheet and general ledger account reconciliations; research and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner. Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities and help ensure established close deadlines are met. Analyze account activity, trends, and variances and provide clear explanations and supporting documentation to Accounting leadership. Prepare accounting schedules, reports, and supporting documentation for financial reporting and management review. Support accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, cash, and other accounting functions as needed, with emphasis on accurate general ledger treatment. Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation within the company's ERP/accounting system and related business systems. Assist with external audit, tax, insurance, and other financial information requests by preparing schedules and supporting documentation. Partner with employees and departments across VLCM to research transactions, resolve accounting questions, and improve the accuracy of financial information. Identify and implement improvements to accounting processes, internal controls, reconciliations, reporting, and workflow efficiency. Perform other accounting responsibilities and special projects as assigned. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR 5+ years of professional accounting experience preferred, including general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close responsibilities. Strong understanding of fundamental accounting concepts. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant accounting experience will be considered. Demonstrated ability to independently own assigned accounts and accounting processes from transaction review through reconciliation and close. Experience working in ERP/accounting systems and comfort learning and using cloud-based business applications. Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, PivotTables, data analysis, and reconciliation of larger data sets. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and follow-through. Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet recurring accounting deadlines, and appropriately handle confidential financial information. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with Accounting team members and employees across the organization.
