ACCOUNTING ASSOCIATE
The Edmonton Metropolitan Region is gaining momentum, and Edmonton Global is helping convert that momentum into investment, business growth, and new opportunities for the region. Behind that work is a finance team that keeps the organization accurate, compliant, and accountable to the municipal shareholders, funders, and partners we serve. As our Accounting Associate, you will play an important role in keeping Edmonton Global’s financial records reliable and its reporting on time.
WHY JOIN EDMONTON GLOBAL?
This is an opportunity to build a strong accounting foundation across the full accounting cycle, including payables, receivables, reconciliations, month-end close, GST compliance, and audit preparation, in an environment that spans multiple legal entities and program funds. You will see how the finance function supports the organization’s work and how reliable financial information supports good decisions.
At Edmonton Global, strong contributors can grow, take ownership, and see the impact of their work. The organization values collaboration, transparency, continuous improvement, and a culture where people are trusted to contribute and learn.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accounting Associate supports the day-to-day financial operations of Edmonton Global across multiple legal entities and operating divisions, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. The role maintains the integrity of our financial records, supports the month-end close, and contributes to ongoing improvements in our finance function.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Process vendor invoices and employee expense claims accurately and timely in Dext and QuickBooks Online, ensuring transactions are coded to the correct accounts, entities, programs, and grants.
- Prepare accounts payable payment runs for review and approval and collect and verify new vendor information in accordance with established vendor verification procedures.
- Record and apply customer payments and follow up on outstanding receivables.
- Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts and corporate credit cards, investigating and resolving discrepancies promptly and escalating unusual items.
- Prepare GST returns and supporting schedules in accordance with CRA requirements for review and approval before filing and maintain accurate records to support remittances and audit requirements.
- Support the month-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations, and assist in preparing monthly financial reports for management review.
- Maintain bookkeeping across multiple legal entities and operating divisions, tracking and allocating expenses across funds, programs, and grant accounts.
- Support routine grant financial reporting and maintain audit-ready documentation, working with program staff.
- Respond to internal inquiries about expenses, invoices, and financial data, supporting staff across the organization.
- Support year-end audit preparation and work with external auditors as required.
- Identify opportunities to streamline finance processes and strengthen internal controls, and assist with implementing new accounting tools, procedures, or workflows.
- Perform other finance and administrative duties as required to support the day-to-day operations of the finance team.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Completed post-secondary education in Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field (college diploma or university degree), or minimum 3–5 years of demonstrated full-cycle accounting experience in lieu of formal education.
- An understanding of accounting fundamentals, including accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, and journal entries is required. Early career candidates, including recent graduates, are encouraged to apply; experience is an asset, but we are happy to provide training to the right candidate.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office suite, including Outlook, Word, and Teams.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in data entry, reconciliations, and recordkeeping.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and firm deadlines, particularly around month-end and year-end.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to ask questions and follow up courteously with staff, vendors, and customers.
- The ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive financial and vendor information.
- The ability to work independently on routine responsibilities, collaborate within a team, and know when to escalate issues.
- A proactive mindset with a willingness to learn and contribute to process improvements.
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Sage, Xero, or similar) and expense automation tools such as Dext is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with multi-entity or fund-based accounting environments, grants, or GST is considered an asset.
