TDC Specialty Underwriters, Inc. (TDCSU), an Excess & Surplus lines subsidiary of The Doctors Company (the nation’s largest writer of physicians’ malpractice insurance based in Napa, California), offers a broad range of professional and management liability insurance products focused on healthcare providers, institutions and organizations. TDCSU has been in existence since January 2016 and is seeking to hire experienced professionals to support its continued growth. TDCSU is headquartered in Farmington, Connecticut.
TDCSU is currently seeking an experienced actuary to support the continued growth of its business.
Responsibilities:
This is a high-level individual contributor position responsible for providing actuarial leadership through advanced analytics, pricing strategy, portfolio management insights, and business decision support. The role is expected to independently identify, analyze, and solve complex business and actuarial problems while developing actionable recommendations that influence underwriting, pricing, profitability, and strategic decisions across TDCSU.
Working under the general supervision of TDCSU’s lead actuary, the Actuary is expected to:
- Independently scope, structure, and complete complex actuarial analyses when provided only high-level business objectives or problem statements
- Identify root causes of analytical, data, or business issues and independently develop, evaluate, and recommend appropriate solutions
- Independently identify and utilize appropriate internal and external resources, including company data sources, actuarial literature, industry publications, professional organizations, regulatory guidance, and subject matter experts to address complex analytical challenges
- Work closely with identified business partners and actuarial teammates in developing and monitoring pricing models
- Support recurring pricing and profitability related analytics within the team, recommending enhancements to processes and analytic techniques to improve the capabilities of the team
- Participate in TDCSU’s profitability review process in collaboration with Underwriting, Claims, and Business Development executives
- Provide account level consulting support
- Develop and maintain management information reporting exhibits, using data visualization techniques to make portfolio insights more accessible to business customers
- Effectively communicates with recipients of analyses

Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Math, Statistics, or Economics/Finance/Business with quantitative emphasis or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) certification
- 5 or more years commercial or specialty lines experience
- Knowledge of property/casualty insurance and actuarial science
- Apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations
- Apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis
- Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
- Deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases
- Deal with a variety of abstract and set variables
- Read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents
- Make effective presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management and/or boards of directors
- Ability to use MS Office, SQL Server and Business Objects
- Manage multiple projects and accurately complete them on time
