Summary of Position

ASTM International’s UK Advanced Manufacturing team is in a period of accelerated growth, driven by a rapidly expanding portfolio of industrial and publicly funded programmes across additive manufacturing and the wider advanced manufacturing landscape. Now five years into its UK presence — and with significant momentum over the past two — the team is scaling to strengthen delivery capability while continuing to build its reputation as a trusted technical authority within ASTM’s global organisation.

We are seeking an Additive Manufacturing Project Engineer to join this small, highly collaborative UK team. Additive manufacturing is a core focus of the role, set within a broader manufacturing systems context that includes qualification, inspection, data, quality, and industrial integration. The role is hands-on and delivery-focused, with real responsibility and visibility across projects spanning the UK and international programmes. Current major UK programs include the UK ATI funded Digitally Enabled Competitive & Sustainable Additive Manufacturing (DECSAM) project (PBF technology) and the UKRI funded Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF) project (DED technology).

The Engineer will work closely with UK and global colleagues, industry partners, and consortia to deliver technically rigorous, standards-aligned outcomes. In addition to project delivery, the role includes exposure to technically led business development: contributing engineering insight to proposals, helping shape new opportunities, and supporting the transition from early engagement through to funded and delivered programmes. This is a great opportunity to grow technical credibility while learning how impactful AM programmes are conceived, secured, and executed.

Experience, Background, and Attributes

We recognise that strong candidates may not meet every criterion listed below. We are interested in engineers with complementary or adjacent experience who demonstrate sound technical judgement, curiosity, and the confidence to contribute ideas and challenge established approaches.

Core Experience & Attributes

  • An engineering background with applied experience in metal additive manufacturing or closely related advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering judgement in practical project environments, balancing evidence, constraints, and real-world outcomes.
  • Comfortable working in a small, collaborative team where individuals contribute across multiple technical and programme activities.
  • Willingness to question assumptions and contribute views on how work should be done, not simply follow predefined instructions.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage credibly with engineers, partners, and stakeholders.
  • An interest in how technical work translates into industrial adoption, qualification pathways, or standards-aligned outcomes.

Technical Experience

Candidates are not expected to cover all areas below. Depth in one area, with awareness of others, is welcomed.

  • Metal additive manufacturing processes (e.g. PBF, DED, or adjacent manufacturing processes relevant to AM integration).
  • AM data, data pedigree, evidence capture, traceability, or digital workflows supporting repeatability and reporting.
  • Inspection, testing, monitoring, or qualification activities in regulated or industrial environments.
  • Materials, feedstock, post-processing, or downstream manufacturing considerations linked to AM.
  • Working with certification and qualification methods, manufacturing quality systems or contributing to technical documentation, reporting, or assurance activities.

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Typically, 3+ years of relevant technical experience, assessed on demonstrated capability and judgement rather than time served alone. All relevant post-graduate research experience will be considered.
  • Master’s Degree, PhD or equivalent research experience is highly sort after.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to join a small, highly capable UK team embedded within ASTM International’s global advanced manufacturing organisation, where individual contribution is visible and valued.
  • A role at the intersection of additive manufacturing, broader advanced manufacturing, and standards, working on programmes that directly influence global industrial adoption and best practice.
  • Meaningful responsibility from day one, with the autonomy to shape how work is delivered and the expectation that you will contribute ideas, challenge approaches, and help set direction.
  • Exposure to a diverse portfolio of UK and international activities, including publicly funded programmes, industrial collaborations, and standards-led initiatives across multiple sectors.
  • A collaborative environment that values technical judgement, curiosity, and integrity over rigid role boundaries or hierarchy.
  • Ongoing development and learning, supported by working alongside globally recognised experts within ASTM and the Wohlers Associates, and through engagement with international partners, committees, and technical communities.
  • Opportunities to represent ASTM through technical workshops, standards activities, industry conferences, and invited speaking engagements, contributing to thought leadership and the organisation’s growing international reputation.

Key Benefits

  • Highly competitive salary, commensurate with experience.
  • Flexible remote working, with the UK team operating as a trusted, distributed group (Bristol location preferred).
  • Annual leave (including public holidays in England and Wales).
  • Employer pension contribution.
  • Benefit supplement payment.
  • Eligibility for an annual company performance bonus.

Working Arrangements and Eligibility

This role is primarily remote, with the UK team operating as a trusted, distributed group. UK and international travel will be required to support programme delivery, partner engagement, and public technical engagements.

Applicants should be based in the UK to enable participation in UK-funded programmes and partnerships. You must have the right to work in the UK; unfortunately, visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
