The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a high-performing, technically competent, and environmentally oriented Administrative Technician to join the Solid Waste Bureau (SWB). The SWB provides and regulates trash and recycling services for the County’s estimated population of 230,000 and is actively working toward Arlington’s Zero Waste goal. The selected candidate will regularly manage administrative and technical processes, coordinate operational support activities, and collaborate with bureau staff, County partners, vendors, and customers to keep daily services running efficiently.
Major job duties:
- Performing timekeeping and payroll duties for the Bureau including entering data into the County’s HRIS system (PRISM) and conducting quality control/auditing;
- Supporting multiple facets of onboarding process for permanent, temporary, and seasonal employees;
- Processing invoices, deposits, purchase requisitions, P-Card transactions, expenditure reconciliations, and other SWB related financial transactions;
- Coordinating IT needs and maintenance, including user access, equipment and software setup, system records, and reporting platforms;\
- Tracking and ensuring compliance of drivers regarding Commercial Driver License (CDL) and Department of Transportation (DOT) records, including assisting with scheduling appointments with DOT;
- Providing support with wellness activities, customer service surveys, and safety committee administration;
- Maintaining inventories, placing orders, receiving deliveries and distributing materials, conducting inventory control audits, coordinating surplus property and managing records; and
- Responding to internal and external inquiries in collaboration with staff, County partners, vendors, and customers.
Education: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent; plus
Experience: Some experience providing administrative support.
Substitution: Successful completion of additional college coursework from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the experience requirement.
Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with experience in one or more of the following:
- Providing administrative support involving payroll, timekeeping, procurement, accounts payable, or financial reconciliation;
- Using enterprise systems to maintain records, process transactions, analyze data, identify discrepancies, and prepare reports;
- Coordinating employee onboarding, system access, technology requests, equipment setup, or asset inventory activities;
- Supporting operational programs in a government, public works, utilities, environmental services, or similarly regulated organization; and/or
- Providing customer service and coordinating work with employees, vendors, partner agencies, and members of the public.
Special Requirements
Employee Preferences Inventory (EPI): To be considered for this position, applicants must achieve a passing score on the online Employee Preferences Inventory (EPI) Assessment. Instructions will be sent to those applicants that do not have a valid score the day after the deadline of the recruitment. Please note the following:
- Scores are valid for one calendar year.
- You cannot retake the assessment until one year has passed since your last attempt.
- If you have completed the EPI within the past year, you do not need to retake it.
- If you have not taken the EPI during the past year, you will receive an email with instructions and a deadline for completing the assessment.
- Failure to complete the EPI by the deadline provided to you in email will disqualify you from this recruitment process.
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It will include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Driver's License: Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver’s license, and must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant’s driving record. Alternatively, the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.
Additional Information
Work Hours: 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some telework/flexible schedule options may be available, contingent upon supervisor approval and workload.
