The application of proprietary methods and technologies, based on FOG (Fiber Optic Gyroscope) and MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology, enables the company to best meet the specific needs of its customers.
Founded as a start-up in 2012 in Italy and recognized as an innovative SME in 2017, Civitanavi has joined the Honeywell Group as of August 2025.
Job Summary
We are seeking a Mid-Senior Avionic System Engineer to provide technical leadership for the architecture, development, integration, and verification of an integrated, high-integrity avionics platform combining redundant computing resources, navigation functions, and application-hosting capabilities.
Main tasks will be the analysis of customer requirements, the generation of the system architecture and the set of formal system requirements, the definition of the applicable methods for the requirements validation, the specification of the procedures required to verify the design, the support for the proper installation of the product into the target platform and the overall coordination of the system development, integration and qualification/certification activities, together with the continuous relationship with the customer for all technical aspects.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the definition and evolution of fault-tolerant, fail-operational and redundant avionics architectures, including processing lanes, power domains, sensing resources, cross-lane communication, voting, monitoring, synchronization, reconfiguration, and degraded operating modes.
- Derive, allocate, and maintain system and subsystem requirements across hardware, software, navigation, Flight Control Systems, platform interfaces, and hosted applications, ensuring end-to-end traceability throughout the development lifecycle.
- Oversee integration, testing, and performance analysis of avionics platform, ensuring compliance with ARP4754A, ARP4761 (safety assessment) and qualification standards (DO-160, MIL-STD-810/461).
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering teams and external stakeholders during design, implementation, integration, troubleshooting, qualification, and flight-test preparation, acting as a technical focal point for system-level decisions.
- Support safety and reliability activities such as FHA, PSSA/SSA, FMEA/FMECA, FTA, common-cause analysis, and failure-containment assessments, translating results into architecture and verification requirements.
- Contribute to product development aligned with the technology roadmap and support proposal preparation through requirement analysis and compliance matrices.
- Ensure timely delivery of project milestones and maintain the master schedule in collaboration with the Project Controller.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Aerospace, Avionics, Electronics, Control, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in avionics system design, aircraft systems integration, Flight Control Systems, navigation systems, or another safety-critical embedded domain.
- Proven experience developing system architectures and requirements for complex airborne equipment or integrated avionics systems.
- Solid knowledge of navigation systems and applications, including INS/IMU, GNSS, AHRS/ADAHRS, Air Data, aiding sensors, sensor fusion, navigation integrity, and timing.
- Experience with system interfaces and airborne communication technologies such as ARINC 429, Ethernet, CAN, serial interfaces, discrete I/O, and time-synchronization signals.
- Knowledge of ARP4754A/ARP4761A, DO-178C, DO-254, DO-160, DO-297, and certification considerations for multicore processors and partitioned real-time operating systems.
- Professional proficiency in English, both written and spoken
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with ARINC 653 concepts, certifiable RTOS environments, multicore interference considerations, deterministic scheduling, health monitoring, and robust partitioning.
- Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering and tools such as SysML, DOORS/DOORS Next, Cameo, MATLAB/Simulink, or equivalent.
- Experience with GNC applications for UAS/RPAS
- Hands-on experience with integration laboratories, HIL rigs, flight-test instrumentation, data analysis, and system-level troubleshooting.
