Advanced Materials Engineer
AerospaceHoneywell Aerospace is seeking a highly skilled Advanced Materials and Process Engineer specializing in materials development, testing, and characterization to join our innovative engineering team.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in materials science and demonstrated experience with processing-microstructure-property relationships for at least one of the Ni-based, Fe-based, or Ti-based alloy families. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects in a collaborative environment, contributing to the development of high-performance components for various demanding applications.
You will report directly to our Mechanical Design Engineering Manager in our Phoenix, AZ site on a hybrid work schedule. Note: For the first 90 days, New Hires must be prepared to work 100% onsite M-F.
• Materials Science: Possess strong materials science fundamentals with education/experience focused on metallurgy, materials engineering, and/or materials science.
• Material Characterization: Lead comprehensive materials development and qualification projects that require a wide breadth of knowledge in techniques such as microstructure analysis, mechanical testing, and data modeling to understand the properties and behaviors of materials used in mechanical designs.
• Mechanical Testing: Conduct experimental testing to understand material performance under various loading conditions, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
• Design Guidance: Integrate insights gained from material characterization to develop guidance for the design process to optimize the mechanical properties and overall performance of components, ensuring durability and reliability in challenging environments.
• Troubleshooting: Investigate material performance issues to identify root causes, leveraging advanced analytical techniques. Recommend solutions to mitigate risks and enhance material reliability.
• Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to ensure successful integration of material characteristics into product design and development processes.
• Documentation and Reporting: Prepare detailed documentation and reports outlining findings from material characterization studies, testing results, and recommendations for design improvements. Present findings to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
• Continuous Improvement: Drive initiatives focused on improving material characterization methods and techniques to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the engineering design process.
• Mentorship: Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and team members in the areas of material characterization and mechanical design principles, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and professional development.
Must Haves:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics
• Minimum of 3 years of experience in material characterization, preferably in aerospace, automotive, or related industries.
We Value:
• Master’s degree in Materials Science, or a related field
• Proficient in material characterization techniques such as mechanical testing, microscopy, and computational modeling tools.
• Experience with mechanical testing (tensile, creep, fatigue) and the ability to interpret testing results.
• Understanding of common failure modes in metals (e.g. creep, LCF, HCF, etc.).
• Knowledgeable in material manufacturing methods such as castings, forgings, additive manufacturing, or composites manufacturing.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proven track record in assessing material performance and implementing improvements.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to diverse audiences.
• Strong understanding of materials science fundamentals with an emphasis in metallurgy, composites, or material processing methods.
• Experience working in a team-oriented environment, demonstrating strong collaboration skills and the ability to influence cross-functional teams.
• Expertise in material behavior under dynamic loading conditions and an understanding of fatigue and fracture mechanics.
• Familiarity with design control processes, risk assessment, and reliability engineering practices.
