Objective Financial Partners is looking for an experienced Certified Financial Planner (CFP) with Canada-U.S. cross-border planning expertise to join our growing team.

We are one of Canada’s largest advice-only financial planning firms. Our planners provide comprehensive financial planning without selling investments, insurance, or other financial products. If you enjoy financial planning but not prospecting, gathering assets, or selling products, you may be a great fit.

This role will focus primarily on clients with financial interests in both Canada and the United States, including U.S. citizens living in Canada and individuals and families moving between the two countries.

Why Objective?

There are relatively few places in Canada where a CFP can build a full-time career in advice-only financial planning, and even fewer where a planner can develop a meaningful specialization in Canada-U.S. cross-border planning.

At Objective, you can focus on being a financial planner. We have an established flow of inquiries from people looking for advice-only planning, including strong demand from clients with cross-border needs. Prospective clients book directly with our planners, so there is no requirement to cold call, gather assets, or build a book of business from scratch.

We also have the technology and processes to support a national, fully remote financial planning practice.

You will have a lot of support around you. Our team of more than 30 people includes 15 experienced financial planners, our accounting team, an estate paralegal, and a fantastic operations and administrative team. You will work closely with firm founder Jason Heath, who has been a leading voice in advice-only financial planning in Canada for nearly 25 years.

Our planners can spend more of their time doing what they do best: working with clients and providing financial advice. If you want to build a career in advice-only financial planning and deepen your Canada-U.S. expertise, we think Objective is one of the best places in Canada to do it.

The role

You will work directly with individuals and families whose financial lives span Canada and the United States. These may include:

  • U.S. citizens living in Canada
  • Canadians moving to or returning from the United States
  • Americans moving to Canada
  • Couples with different citizenship or residency statuses
  • Retirees with Canadian and U.S. pensions, retirement accounts, or assets
  • Executives, professionals, and business owners with more complex cross-border circumstances

You will prepare and present financial plans and provide ongoing advice relating to retirement, tax, investment strategy, estate planning, insurance, and cash flow. Cross-border considerations may include residency and departure planning, Canadian and U.S. retirement accounts, Social Security and government benefits, investment account restrictions, currency and withdrawal planning, and coordinating financial decisions across both tax systems.

You will not be expected to prepare Canadian or U.S. tax returns or provide legal advice. You will, however, need to recognize important tax, estate, and regulatory issues and work effectively with our tax team and clients’ Canadian and U.S. tax and legal professionals.

Although the role will focus on cross-border clients, you may also work with other Canadian financial planning clients depending on demand and capacity.

What we are looking for

  • CFP or Pl. Fin. certification
  • Several years of financial planning experience
  • Meaningful experience working with Canada-U.S. cross-border clients
  • Strong technical knowledge of Canadian retirement, tax, investment, insurance, and estate planning
  • A working understanding of the planning issues that arise for U.S. citizens in Canada and people moving between Canada and the United States
  • The ability to identify when specialized Canadian or U.S. tax or legal advice is required
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A commitment to excellent client service
  • Comfort meeting prospective clients and scoping engagements
  • The ability to explain complex cross-border issues clearly and practically
  • A positive, collaborative approach
  • The ability to work independently as part of a supportive, fully remote team

Experience with U.S. retirement accounts, Social Security, cross-border investment considerations, or Canadian and U.S. tax coordination would be particularly valuable. Additional Canadian or U.S. tax, accounting, investment, or financial planning credentials would be an asset but are not required.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who wants to build their career in advice-only financial planning and become a key part of our cross-border practice.

Compensation

The expected annual compensation range for an established planner working a normal full-time workweek is $125,000 to $175,000. Compensation is ultimately based on planner billings, and there is no cap on earnings, so planners with higher billings may earn more than this range.

New planners begin with a short salaried onboarding period before transitioning to billings-based compensation.

There are no product commissions, asset gathering expectations, or investment revenue targets tied to the role. Compensation is based on planner billings, and there is no cap on earnings.

There are also opportunities over time to expand our cross-border planning services, mentor other planners, develop educational content, and take on additional responsibilities within the firm.

If you want to spend your time providing financial planning advice rather than selling products or gathering assets, we would love to hear from you.

Please submit your resume to hr@objectivecfp.com.

This is a fully remote position available to candidates residing in Canada.
