We are looking for an AI & Software Solutions Architect to own architectural decisions across our Software Development department and help our teams build reliable systems that meet business needs. You will guide the modernisation of our legacy platform, shape how we use AI in production, and review solutions built by internal teams and external vendors.
As the department’s sole Solutions Architect, you will work across 500+ repositories spanning legacy PHP, Node.js/Python services and LLM-based products. This is a senior individual contributor role with technical influence across teams and no direct people management. You will make and validate architectural decisions; engineering teams will deliver the implementation.
What you will do:
- Translate business needs into technical designs, explain trade-offs, costs and risks, and review architecture for new services and migrations.
- Review code, architecture and vendor deliverables. Produce clear written findings, guide teams through improvements, and verify that issues have been resolved.
- Define guardrails for production LLM and agentic systems, including model routing, multi-provider access, observability, security and cost control.
- Guide legacy modernisation: evolving the PHP platform, replacing custom authorisation with SSO, and moving n8n workflows into production code.
- Build prototypes and reference implementations in Node.js/Python to test architectural decisions and give engineering teams a practical starting point.
- Conduct technical interviews for engineering hires and help maintain the department’s engineering standards.
What you will bring:
- 5+ years in software engineering, including 3+ years owning architectural decisions for production systems as an architect, principal engineer or technical lead.
- Strong system design fundamentals for scalable, high-load distributed systems, including reliability, failure handling, observability and architectural trade-offs.
- Hands-on AWS experience designing and running production services.
- Hands-on experience taking at least one LLM-based solution from business need and architecture through implementation to production operation, including areas such as RAG, tool calling, multiple providers, observability and cost optimisation.
- Experience evaluating and monitoring LLM systems across quality, latency and cost using Langfuse or equivalent tooling.
- Experience reviewing other teams’ code and architecture, plus at least one legacy migration, such as a PHP monolith to Node.js/Python services.
- Working experience with Python and/or Node.js backends, with sufficient familiarity to review solutions across both stacks. PostgreSQL and NoSQL design and query optimisation, and event-driven systems using Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar brokers.
- Practical experience using agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex or similar, with sound judgement about validating generated output.
- Clear technical writing and communication with engineers and non-technical stakeholders. Strong business and architectural judgement: you connect technical decisions to business goals, cost, risk and measurable outcomes, take responsibility when decisions fail, and adjust your approach based on evidence.
- B2 or higher English for collaboration with distributed teams.
Nice to have:
- Experience with Keycloak or Azure AD SSO migrations.
- Experience with Backstage.
- Experience conducting vendor delivery audits.
- AWS Solutions Architect – Professional or Anthropic Claude certification.
